حَمَاهُ عن الألحْاظِ طَرْفٌ مُذَكَّرُ
The rose of her cheeks outshone the rose in splendor.
Her cheek is a rose, her cheek's rose is joy upon roses
A fierce gaze shielded it from gazing eyes.
A coy glance protects it, bashfully downcast

إذا نامَ يُدْميه المُنى والتفكُّرُ
And a smooth, gold-bright, tender cheek—
Her soft, supple, pink cheek when it sleeps
When it sleeps, wishes and reflection make it bleed.
Is stirred by yearning and thoughts

She shot me with an arrow from languid eyelids;
She shot me with an arrow from her languid eyelids
Their dagger-pricks within my breast never abate.
In my love for her, a wound that does not heal

Union with her is a cure for every disease and sickness.
Reunion with her is the cure for all pain and sickness
And her estrangement is a fire blazing upon the heart.
Parting from her, a fire burning my heart

She is the sun in radiance; one never tires of her rising.
She is the sun, her rising light never wearying
Exalted, she is beyond the reach of gazing eyes.
Eyes lower before her brilliance

And a bewitching beauty—if her mouth utters words,
A beauty, and if her mouth articulates in speech
Musk and ambergris waft from their fragrance.
Musk emanates from her breath and ambergris

Had Ibn Kulthum seen the beauty of her face,
If Ibn Al-Mu'tazz had seen her face's beauty
He would have boasted of her, not of his tribe.
He would have boasted of her, not his tribe
