يا نهراً سميتَ بالأصغرين
وأنتand you أزريتَyou put to shame علىupon الأصغرِthe lesser one
وأنت أزريتَ على الأصغرِ
O river named al-Asgharayn,
O river named Al-Asgharain
Yet you have put the lesser one to shame.
Though you've been wronged by the name Al-Asghar
لوif أنصفَwere fair الناسُthe people جميعاًall together لماwould not have
لو أنصفَ الناسُ جميعاً لما
سمّاكnamed you أهلُthe people of الأرضِthe earth بالأصغرِas 'the lesser'
سمّاك أهلُ الأرضِ بالأصغرِ
Had all people been fair, never would
Had people been fair, they'd have named you Al-Kawthar
The people of the earth have called you 'the lesser.'
Yet the people of earth called you Al-Asghar

So tower above the rivers of all humankind,
Rise above all the rivers of the world
Throughout every region of the towns, and take pride.
From every corner and every village, and be proud

For noble excellence alone is what
For true merit lies in the noble deed
The people of the earth regard as a source of pride.
That people see as grand and proud

Why do I see the noble men in heedlessness?
Why do I see the ignorant in heedlessness?
Had they been fair, they would have called you al-Kawthar.
If they were fair, they'd have named you Al-Kawthar

Hallowed are you, as river and as stream.
You are sacred, above any river or stream
Indeed, whoever sells and whoever buys prospers.
Blessed are those who buy and those who sell

Your water is as if from Heaven's gardens
Of Paradise, or from its richly fragrant musk.
Or Paradise's sweet musk and ambergris

Sweet in taste and flavor
Honey and sugar are sweet to taste.
Like the finest honey and sugar

Its limpid flow—with some of your purest water.
In your most pure and pristine water

Without you our land would be barren
Devoid of crops and left unsown.
Empty of crops, with nothing sown or tilled

No homes for us would be appealing
Pleasing in appearance or in its inner character.
Lovely, splendid, or finely built

Blessed as river and as flowing stream.
Above any river or Ja'far's spring

Flowing without toil, never held back.
Flowing effortlessly, never compelled or coerced

As if your water is supplied
Were brought without toil from the seas.
Effortlessly from the oceans immersed

And as long as a reciter recites upon a pulpit.
Or heat waves scorch from an orator's minbar
