My two friends, worry and sorrow have encamped

in my heart against my will; what counsel have you concerning them?

They wish to leave me no solace,

and to leave me thin-bodied and sick.

    وإن كُنْتُما لا تسعداني فأحْجِمَا

    If you two will help me, gird yourselves and advance;

but if you will not help me, hold back.

and have mustered a vast army against us.

Shall we meet them in abasement and humiliation, under compulsion,

or is war more fitting, lest you two regret it?

    فلسنا بذِي عزٍّ لنرميَ مَنْ رَمَى

    Then my soul, urging cowardice, told me: Restrain yourself;

for we have no might to strike whoever has struck.

Nor do we possess strength in the face of adversity,

nor are we sons of kings, that we should advance.

And my heart told me: Prepare, for I

see myself prepared, a guardian of your affairs.

fiercely protective, and in adversity a keen, cleaving sword?

when I have patience, I do not suffer.

I do not care if its vicissitudes give me to drink

cups of wine, or, apparently, a bitter draught.

I am a man whose heart is not frightened by a sudden sound,

nor by a spiteful man's voice when he mutters.

Nor does the beauty of Maʿbad's singing entice me,

nor a songster's voice trilling among the branches.

if one day I find no food but dates.

I shall turn my soul away from countless desires,

even if I never find a dirham in my hand.

Whatever decree the Most Merciful ordains for me,

I accept it willingly and do not complain of injustice,

knowing that I do not possess a dirham,

and complaint is useless—so with what could I avert it?

I shall bend my back beneath it and bear its weight,

even if you shatter my backbone and bones.

I shall endure with a patience that patience itself falls short of,

until patience cries out in pain because of me.

Otherwise I am not the valiant champion who

clothed himself in death's garments and made them his turban.

Even if Time clips my primary flight feathers,

I will not complain to my enemy and make him smile.

Nor will I complain to a friend, laying my troubles bare,

leaving him sorrowful, unable to speak.

I shall hide my secret from those near and far,

even if my heart is poisoned with venom.

once the end is reached, no 'perhaps' can help.

impregnable, and provides him with piety and bliss,

among the houris and young attendants in a garden of Paradise,

dwelling there, offered sealed nectar to drink.

everyone is repaid for what he has sent ahead.
