May God bring us together after parting,

And with that may gracious days return,

And days of an age that kept us united,

So that a pledge to us may be fulfilled after separation.

And may the coming nights restore what

Has passed—nights whose edge was blunt.

Such is the world's way: reunion and parting,

And sorrow, and now loss, now wholeness.

And they said, “Hold fast to the cords of consolation.”

But how, when the cords of consolation are a rein?

So we pass the morning without noble patience, grieving

For you, and reach evening with tears streaming.

And what harm is there if one who sees no father

Remains sorrowful—or is he to blame?

And what blame is ours if we kill ourselves,

When the one we love is beyond reach, and our aim hard to attain?
