my heart finds no sweetness there for anguish.

The wind swept over it through valleys of decay,

    whether violent, temperate, or gentle.

since separation, from anguish and weeping?

O my reproacher, leave me be and spare me blame, for I

am one of love's and affliction's captives.

Had you tasted what I endured of love's inward pain,

you would excuse me and strive to bring me healing.

Or had you pictured the one I love, you would be love-maddened and remain

    bewildered in hardship and ease.

May rain bless the days of youth, when

the beloved did not draw away for fear of watchers.

was clear of murk and motes.

lived at ease—with a baleful eye.

the beloved turned away and would grant no meeting.

and gray hair has come with grief and hardship?

seeking guidance, through praise, from mankind's master.

    on a swift, handsome, thick-cheeked she-camel.

And seek Abū al-ʿArab ibn Sulṭān, who

and the father of generosity, putting the generous to shame.

Gentle in character, ascetic and scrupulously pious,

yet like a lion in battle.

A downpour when the rain withholds its water,

O son of the just Imam Sulṭān of Arabdom,

master of lords and true Arabs,

Indeed, I have hoped you would meet my need,

and, as I believe, my hope will not be disappointed.

And I cherish a hope of finding favor; I have only

hoped that you would answer my call.

Beware of letting Time afflict me

with its trials of misery and distress,

or cloud what is clear in my draught

with its reversals, or demolish my edifice.

So ward off the harm of calamities and hold them back,

lest Time bite into my limbs through them.

And be generous with what you own, for it

will perish, while my fair praise of you endures.

has enriched humankind through his abundant giving.

By my praise of you I hope for the finest reward tomorrow,

or that it may lodge me in an everlasting abode.

Take it as a gift: nothing like it is uttered

by any of the eloquent or the poets.

I have kept it apart from every splendid kingdom,

since you are among those worthy of it.

So hear this Arabic poem: it seems,

in its beauty, like a lovely, tender maiden.

There is no fault in its verses, except that when

it is recited, it blackens the faces of enemies.
