“Halt,” we said; in Layla’s dwelling are places to linger.

For I shall surely stay, even if you part from me.

If my creed is your creed, turn aside with us,

And pause at her ruins; do not refuse.

If you will not pause, help me weep,

For weeping dispels care and sorrow.

Let me ease my heart of care and grief,

For separation and abandonment make my heart tremble.

Do not heap blame upon me; I have enough, for I

Know my ailment and the causes of affection.

    وصبرٌ وسقمٌ بأئنٌ ومؤالفُ

    Forgetfulness and love—one departing, the other encamped;

    And patience and sickness—one gone, the other a companion;

    وقلبٌ وحبٌّ طائعٌ ومخالفُ

    And tears and reason—one pooled, the other departed;

And heart and love—one obedient, the other defiant.

No wonder if I let my tears stream in the dwelling,

For I have bygone nights in Layla’s protected grounds.

May the pouring rain of the two Simaks water her dwelling,

From rainclouds shedding tears in steady streams,

As it was watered at morning and evening

By my streaming tears, on the morning of parting.

Come, linger, if you are dear to me,

At the beloved ones’ spring encampment; I shall surely stay.

At an encampment by the bend, assailed in turn

By storms of the north wind.

It lies effaced, its dwellers, families, and neighbors gone,

Where heavy rainclouds linger over it.

I stood greeting it, my tears streaming,

For those stopping-places are the heart’s cure.

I ask it about them; how could I be answered

By vestiges effaced by tempestuous winds?

So wild gazelles now graze there,

Where once dwelt fair, beautiful, chaste women.

And I remember it when life was supple and soft,

And my shade in those encampments spread wide.

May every morning and evening cloud water Layla’s dwelling,

Though a visitation of longing for her has come upon me today.

A maiden with a face like the sun, and, like the dark night,

Luxuriant hair, and cheek and neck like crystal.

When she sits, she flows over the earth from sheer delicacy,

And when she walks, her buttocks sway.

If she meets the sky’s full moon with her face,

It falls before her from its height, eclipsed.

The radiance of her face puts the sunlight to shame,

And her curves shame the bān’s slender shoot.

The embroidery of her mantle marks her body,

So her garments and bordered cloaks cause her pain.

Her radiance shines through from beneath her covering,

So wraps cannot conceal her two cheeks.

It has grown accustomed to slaying lovers, as though it were

A king sworn to slay humankind.

    Sultan, our sword, is accustomed to giving gifts;

In his eminence, he shows gracious kindnesses to humankind.

Forbearing, he requites wrongdoers with his pardon,

And never ceases to forgive them, ever gentle.

O community of Islam, your imam is indeed

A pious imam whom no upheavals assail.

    له من سجاياهُ عليكم عواطفُ

    Do not despair if you have committed a crime;

His character inclines him to compassion toward you.

Without him, guidance would have collapsed, and there would have tottered

Mountains of wisdom; the adversary would have reared his head.

And the upheavals of the ages would have descended upon your world,

And those upheavals would have engulfed you in humiliation.

Religion’s pillar would have been shaken, its rampart collapsed,

And piety’s practices and Qur’an copies would have been neglected.

Indeed, the young man Sultan is a lion, a mighty lion,

Before whom caliphs fall, willingly yielding the reins.

A king to whom the world submits in fear,

And its kings and peoples bow before him.
