And some people parted from their wives,
Some people's lands light up, while their women are in despair.
And because of this, rugged land and plain grew too narrow for them.
The rough and easy paths become too narrow for them.

Building, tillage, and crops dwindled for humankind,
Little construction, farming or planting for people remains.
And the land's heights and lowlands grew too cramped for its inhabitants.
The high and low lands become too narrow for their people.

The wells had dried up, save for a rare few,
The wells have dried up, except for a few.
And all the people became destitute, and families scattered.
All people are suffering and families are divided.

Some head west seeking their livelihood.
And some went east, while most were thrown into turmoil.
Others go east and the groups are confused.

You see people reeling like drunkards, humbly bowed in abasement,
You see people drunk, humbly submitting,
From scarcity, until no child of theirs even cries out.
So little that not even a child cries out for them.

I remember some gathering the palms' unripe dates,
I knew some who would pick date palms for their pits,
And drinking water that is neither bitter nor sweet.
And drink undrinkable and tasteless water.

Some set out asking people for bare sustenance,
Some took to asking people for scraps,
And humiliation befell them through their wretched begging.
So begging brought them disgrace and humiliation.

Some eat little and are not wasteful,
And some you see begging, wholly dependent.
While others beg though they have plenty.

Some neither cry nor laugh,
Enduring burdens, never free of anxiety.
Enduring worries and grief without respite.

Some wished for death because of their poverty,
Some wish for pigeons due to their poverty,
And because of the misery they had seen and the want that befell them.
And the evils they saw and troubles that befell them.

Plus a thousand elapsed and eight—years without sweetness.
And a thousand plus eight and they did not get relief.

You showered us with a downpour from the bounty of your two hands,
You rained on us from your generous palms, a downpour
Which fulfilled a role that rainfall could not fulfill.
That took the place of what cannot be upheld.

Until you put ignorance to death and justice spread.
Until ignorance passes and justice spreads.
