وقلتُand I said لهto him لقياكَmeeting you خيرُthe best عُلالةٍsolace
إِذاwhen كنتyou are ذَاpossessed of بشرcheerfulness ولانَتْand grew supple معاطِفُthe body's sides
And I said to him, 'Meeting you is the best solace,
I said to him, meeting you is better solace
When you are cheerful and your body grows supple.
If you are human and compassionate attires you
وهاتِand give استقنىgive me drink (reading uncertain) منfrom خمرِthe wine of ثغركyour mouth إِنّهاindeed it is
حلالٌlawful لهاfor it ماnot باشرتْهاhave touched it الأساقِفُthe bishops
And come, give me a drink of the wine of your mouth; it is
Give me a draught of the wine of your mouth, it is
Lawful in itself—no bishops have touched it.'
Lawful though handled by bishops
فأصغىso he leaned close بثغرٍwith a mouth كالجُمانِlike pearls منضداًneatly arranged
وجادَand gave generously لناto us مماfrom what حوَتْهُheld it المرَاشِفُthe lips
So he leaned close, with a mouth like pearls neatly strung,
So he inclined with a mouth like a goblet
And gave us freely from what his lips held.
And freely gave us what the pillows contained
سكرتُI grew drunk بهاon it صِرفاًundiluted سُلافاًchoice wine مِزَاجُهاits admixture
I grew drunk on it—pure, choice wine, whose admixture
I got drunk on it, its flavour smooth, refined
Was powdered, fragrant musk in double measure.
An essence of perfumed double-distilled musk
ولماand when تناشدْناwe entreated one another وطالَand grew long عتابُناour reproaches
جرَتflowed عَبَرَاتٌtears ماnot عَدَتْهاescaped them المطارِفُthe silken cloaks
And when we entreated one another and our reproaches grew long,
When we reproached each other and our blame grew long
Tears flowed that our silken cloaks could not escape.
Tears flowed that kerchiefs could not contain
فقلتُso I said لماwhy هذاthis البكاءweeping بعبرةٍwith a tear
فقالso he said بكائيmy weeping منof فراقِكparting from you خائفُafraid
So I said tearfully, 'Why this weeping?'
I said, why these tears with sorrow?
He said, 'My weeping fears parting from you.'
He said, I weep in fear of parting from you
فقلتso I said أتبكيdo you weep فيat اللقاءِthe reunion وفيand in النوىseparation
فقالso he said كلاboth الحالينstates فيهin it متالفُdeadly perils
I said, 'Do you weep at reunion and in separation?'
I said, do you cry in meeting and in intimacy?
He said, 'Each of the two states holds deadly perils.'
He said, no, in both states I am at one with you
فقلتso I said فهلْthen is there منany راحةٍrespite قالhe said ليto me فلاthen no
أرَىI see راحةًrespite إلاexcept لمنfor whoever يؤالفُlives in harmony
I said, 'Then is there any respite?' He told me, 'No—
I said, is there any comfort? He said, I see
I see no respite except for one who lives in harmony.'
No comfort, save in one who is intimate with me
شدائدُhardships شتَّىvarious والحبيبُand the beloved مساعفٌobliging
فكيفَthen how بهwith him إذْwhen كانhe was وهْوwhile he is مخالِفُunwilling
Hardships are many, even when the beloved is obliging;
Various woes, and the beloved redoubles them
How, then, is it with him when he is unwilling?
How can it be, when he is at odds with me?
فمنso whoever حَبَّloves أوor منwhoever حُبّis loved فهوthen he is معذبٌtormented
ولاand never زالَceased يغشاهُovertakes him الأسَىsorrow والمخارفُand fears (reading uncertain)
For whoever loves or is loved is tormented,
Whoever loves, or is loved, is tormented
And sorrow and fears never cease to overtake him.
Ever shrouded in grief and separation
فماso not ساءَناwronged us سوءاill treatment ولاnor سامَناinflicted on us أذَىharm
منamong الخلقhumankind إلاexcept منthose whom نرَىwe see ونؤالفُand we befriend
For none has done us ill or inflicted harm on us,
We have known no ill or harm from people
Among humankind, except those we see and befriend.
Save those we see yet do not befriend
فإنيfor indeed I رأيتُfound البعدdistance سعداًgood fortune لمنfor whoever نأىwithdrew
عنfrom الناسpeople اوor منwhoever لمdid not تملهweary him المآلفُthe familiar haunts
For I have found distance a blessing for one who withdraws
For I saw that absence brings joy to one who shuns
From people, or one whom familiar haunts have not wearied.
Mankind, or whom acquaintances do not content
نعشْlet us live فيon ذُرىsummits العلياthe loftiest وحيداًalone موحداًaffirming God's oneness

Let us live on lofty summits, alone, affirming God's oneness,
Let us live aloof, alone, sincere, unique
Solitary, with no caller crying out at your dwelling.
Peerless, though your abode no herald has announced

May you behold the Gardens of Eden, keeping company
May you see the gardens of Eden as a friend
There with the houris, where lofty heights enfold you.
There the houri contain you in pavilions
وبادرand hasten إلىtoward الخيراتِgood deeds منfrom كلevery وجهةٍdirection
وكنand be كيِّساًprudent تُسْدَىare bestowed إليكupon you العَوَارِفُfavors
And hasten toward good deeds from every direction,
And strive for virtues from every direction
And be prudent: favors will be bestowed upon you.
Be wise so mysteries will be unveiled for you
وباشرْand act إذاwhen مرّتْpassed بكby you الدهرَthrough time فرصةٌan opportunity
فإنfor if لمnot تباشرْهاact on it فإنكthen you are آسفُregretful
And act when, in the course of time, an opportunity comes your way;
And seize each opportunity when it passes
For if you do not act on it, you will be regretful.
For if you let it slip, you will regret and grieve
