Accept a greeting from a brother in affection,

As long as rain pours down and the south wind blows.

And my praise is like rose-hued ambergris,

In fragrance putting lavender's scent to shame.

And a sincere friend's salutations, adorned with love,

Long-standing, as long as a lover yearns and wanders in passion.

    With meanings like pearls,

Fresh, surpassing a precious necklace in their arrangement.

    In lines like the mouths

Of fair, shy maidens when they appear smiling.

And a caring friend's affections, fashioned by a heart

Tender, loving reunion and loving greetings of peace.

These we have dedicated to those whose bounty

Exceeded our expectations and surpassed the clouds.

They are the supplicant's refuge and the loyal friend's shelter,

And poison to enemies, and succor to orphans.

And those who, apart from other people, spend the night

Before the Lord of the Throne, prostrating and standing in prayer.

And when addressed with folly, they safeguard

Their honor from it and say, 'Peace.'

And whenever they pass the idle talk of base men,

They declare their words false and pass on nobly.

Likewise, the forefathers before them were,

In their eminence, the most faithful of people to their pledges.

Long have you sought it through a sale

Or an option; thus we have composed these words.

We all held back from selling it, and today

We have returned to selling it, O companions.

If you are intent on buying it,

Then come and make your intention known to me.

Or if your hearts are content to forgo it,

    Why this state of affairs—why?

Indeed, by my life, I have written this to you

As an explanation to you; I fear reproach,

And unkindness on my part in selling to others than you,

Lest my roses bring on a cold.

I was told, 'Sell to people other than them.'

I said, 'What shall I say?' They said, 'Feign blindness.'

I said, 'No! Feigning blindness is deceit,

And my deceiving them would be forbidden.'

I shall not forget your kindness, even if you go far

From my dwelling—a journey of two thousand years.

Turned bitterly salty, and my gold has turned to dust.

Here I am, and the property is at your disposal.

So consider my plight—may you be spared sin's punishment.
