    وأشهى من الماء الزلازلِ وأعذبُ

    A greeting like the scent of musk—nay, it is more fragrant;

    And more delectable than pure water, and sweeter;

    وأعذب من ريقِ الحبيبِ وأطيبُ

    And sweeter than honey mingled with sweet water;

    And sweeter than the beloved's saliva, and more pleasant.

    Its wafting scent surpasses the fragrance of sweet herbs,

    And puts the fragrance of aloeswood to shame when it is turned.

    It soothes the hearts of distraught lovers with its charm,

    And dispels sorrows whenever it speaks clearly.

    And if its words are recited in gatherings,

    A child, a middle-aged man, and a gray-haired elder cry out in response to them.

    A written page, then, like Moses' palm, and a full-breasted maiden,

    Outshining the sun's radiance before it sets.

    It contained expressions of meaning, as though they were

    Necklaces of rubies—nay, it is more wondrous.

    وحَنَّ إلى وادي العتيق مُعَذَّبُ

    And fine praise, as long as rain clouds pour in torrents

    And a tormented soul yearns for Wadi al-Atiq;

    And a remembrance of greetings, renewing what has passed

    Of affection and tender concern—what is never forgotten.

    فتى المجد والنَّدْبُ الشجاع المجرَّبُ

    I offer it especially to Muhammad, virtuous and generous,

    A youth of glory, and a gallant man, brave and proven;

    هو المرتَضَى في كل قلبٍ محبَّبُ

    A brother to virtue, kindness, good cheer, and contentment;

    He is the esteemed one, beloved in every heart.

    And it was fitting that we should visit your dwellings,

    Hastening on our heads, not riding on camels.

    And we long to walk barefoot to visit you,

    But between us and that lie a wilderness and a vast desert plain.
