وكُلّand every امْرِىءٍman يُجْزىis repaid بماfor what كانَhe was ساعِياstriving
May God repay Qabid with evil for his deed.
May God reward evil upon the seizer for his deed,
And every man is repaid for what he strove for.
And every man is rewarded for what he was seeking.
دعاhe called قابِضاًQabid والمُرْهَفاتُand the keen-edged swords يُرِدْنَهُthey seek him
فقُبِّحْتَso may you be disgraced مَدْعُوّاًas the one called ولَبَّيكَand here I am at your call داعِياas the caller
He called Qabid while the keen-edged swords sought him.
You invoked a seizer while the bereaved ones reject you,
So cursed be you, the one called; and to you, the caller, 'Here I am!'
So you are despised when called and obeyed when summoning.
فَلَيْتَso, if only عُبَيْدَUbayd اللّهِAllah كانَhad been مَكانَهُin his place

Would that Ubayd Allah had been in his place,
If only Ubayd Allah were in his place, fallen,
Lying slain, and I had heard no herald of Tawba's death.
And I did not hear the repentance of a lamenter.
