فتىًa young man لَمْdid not يَزَلْcease يَزْدادُgrow further خيراًin goodness لدنْsince نَشاhe grew up
فتىً لَمْ يَزَلْ يَزْدادُ خيراً لدنْ نَشا
إلىuntil أَنْthat علاهُoverspread him الشَّيْبُgray hair فَوْقَover المسايحِthe locks of hair
إلى أَنْ علاهُ الشَّيْبُ فَوْقَ المسايحِ
A youth who kept growing in goodness from his earliest years,
A youth who did not cease to increase in goodness since he was a baby
until gray hair spread over his locks.
Until old age overtook him above the temples
تَراهُyou see him إذاwhen ماemphatic particle المَوْتُdeath حَلَّdescended بورْدهِat his watering place
تَراهُ إذا ما المَوْتُ حَلَّ بورْدهِ
ضَروباًstriking repeatedly علىupon أقْرانِهِhis opponents بالصَّفائِحِwith broad sword-blades
ضَروباً على أقْرانِهِ بالصَّفائِحِ
You see him, when death descends upon his watering place,
You see him when death takes its toll on his freshness
striking his opponents again and again with broad blades.
شُجاعٌbrave لدىamid الهَيْجاءِbattle ثبْتٌsteadfast مشايحٌresolute
شُجاعٌ لدى الهَيْجاءِ ثبْتٌ مشايحٌ
إذاwhen انْحازَwithdrew عنfrom أقْرانِهِits opponents كُلُّevery سابحِswift steed
إذا انْحازَ عن أقْرانِهِ كُلُّ سابحِ
Brave in battle, steadfast and resolute,
when every swift steed withdraws from its foes.
فعاشَso he lived حَميداًpraised لاnot ذَميماًblameworthy فِعالُهُhis deeds
فعاشَ حَميداً لا ذَميماً فِعالُهُ
وَصُولاًmaintaining close ties لقُرباهُwith his kin يُرىhe is seen غَيْرَnot كالحِscowling
وَصُولاً لقُرباهُ يُرى غَيْرَ كالحِ
So he lived praised, his deeds free of blame,
maintaining close ties with his kin, seen without a scowl.
