ياO قَوْمِmy people قَدْindeed أَحْرَقْتُمُونِيyou have burned me بِاللَّوْمْwith reproach
يا قَوْمِ قَدْ أَحْرَقْتُمُونِي بِاللَّوْمْ
وَلَمْand did not أُقاتِلْI fight عامِراًʿĀmir قَبْلَbefore الْيَوْمْtoday
وَلَمْ أُقاتِلْ عامِراً قَبْلَ الْيَوْمْ
O my people, you have burned me with reproach.
And I had not fought ʿĀmir before today.
فَالْيَوْمَso today إِذْnow that قاتَلْتُهُمْI fought them فَلاthen no لَوْمْreproach
فَالْيَوْمَ إِذْ قاتَلْتُهُمْ فَلا لَوْمْ
تَقَدَّمُواadvance وَقَدِّمُونِيand send me forward لِلْقَوْمْto face the enemy
تَقَدَّمُوا وَقَدِّمُونِي لِلْقَوْمْ
So today, now that I have fought them, there is no reproach.
Advance, and send me forward to face the enemy.
شَتَّانَhow far apart هَذاthis وَالْعِناقُand embracing وَالنَّوْمْand sleep
شَتَّانَ هَذا وَالْعِناقُ وَالنَّوْمْ
وَالْمَضْجَعُand the bed الْبارِدُcool فِيin ظِلِّthe shade of الدَّوْمْthe doum palms
وَالْمَضْجَعُ الْبارِدُ فِي ظِلِّ الدَّوْمْ
How far removed this is from embracing and sleep,
And the cool bed in the shade of doum palms!
