The dwelling sites have faded at Mutaliʿ, then Aban,

And grown old at al-Hubs, then al-Suban,

Then the slopes of Sara and al-Qanan, as though they were

Writings retraced by a Yemeni boy,

Practiced and clever, moving again and again with his hand

A pen over withered palm stalks and ban wood.

Or a tattoo fashioned by a woman of the uplands,

Who fixed her marks on the backs of finger-joints and fingertips.

The Hanzali woman's traces have come to

Glitter beneath the great acacias of the wooded hollows.

    وَتَبَدَّلَت خَيطاً مِنَ الأُحدانِ

    They endured, but those who dwelt there did not;

They have taken instead a flock of solitary ostriches,

And cows lingering with their calves, coming and going,

And pale does bending tenderly beside their fawns.

So I turned from their ruins on a sturdy she-camel,

Powerful, like a solidly built palace.

I planned to reach water in the darkness of early morning,

And arrived before colors could be distinguished:

An abandoned well, long unacquainted with a visitor,

Among bright-yellow wells and others choked with earth.

Then I poured bucketfuls into a chipped trough,

Worn with age, using a medium-sized leather bucket.

She took a scant drink; her pace had overtaken

Flocks of sandgrouse, swooping down chin-first.

    وَمَكانَهُنَّ الكورُ وَالنِسعانِ

    Then I drew back my hand, the sword-case, and my cushion;

Their place was the saddle and its two girths.

Like an Indian's ship, whose curved hull he overlaid

With broad planks and oily coatings.

Her old planking fitted tight, and now

Not even two rear riders could straighten her sway.

She seemed, the day after her exhaustion, either herself

Or a dark-cheeked wild bull, a creature of the lair,

Huddled against his arta shrubs, while hidden

From him were the stars of an overcast night.

Loose sand shields him from the damp earth, replenished

By broad sandy flats, its drifting heaps spread over the dunes.

Then sunrise rescued what remained of his life,

Bare as a naked man scooping water inside a well.

Had he read their omens, there had crossed his path

Birds of warning, foretelling peril and spear-thrusts.

He ran warily, endowed with weapons,

Two spears quivering above his brow,

Until a huntsman's trained hounds were set upon him,

A lean-bellied man running with them like a wolf.

He shielded his vital parts and drove them off with his horn,

As a warrior guards his companions' exposed flank,

Striking sideways at pulsing hearts, and charging forward,

As though he pierced them with a spearhead.

Until the confusion of his fright cleared from him,

Their fallen bodies seeming like wine-jar casings.

Then he crossed the dune's far end, as though he were

A white cloth brightened by the sun after being kept covered.

He speeds away unharmed and walks aside,

Nimble, easing the fearful one's anxiety.

Is it that one, then, or a small-headed ostrich, whose plumage seems

Patches of discarded rags upon branches?

He sheds the loose feathers of his plumage, crouching low

To run, drawing shoulder and lower neck tight.

Small-headed, his shank like the butt of a spear,

His breast like the broad face of a lute.

Enamored of a fleet hen with bare shanks,

He walks through colocynth amid slender shoots.

She kept seeking in the water-hollows of Saʿaʾid,

Between al-Salil and the outlet of al-Sullan,

A shaggy growth of tannum plants, beaten by dew,

    And scattered colocynth from al-Khutban.

Until, when evening drew near, the two went back

    To the night-nest of a pure-white, early-spring brood.

Long had it lain there; its former state was altered

By spring drizzles on the stony ground of al-Kabawan.
