O reproacher, rise and reproach me now, or leave off.

For I will not desist, even if you cease reproaching me.

O reproacher, no, by God, there is no safety,

even though the wealth-increasing miser's soul may fear.

I protect my honor with inherited wealth, and buy

praise with it: whoever seeks praise is a buyer.

How many a man buys good renown with his wealth,

throughout his days, in every nomad camp and settlement!

With it I rival my peers in every place,

fulfill the duties of the righteous, and follow their example.

So if you see me today safe in your presence,

I am no longer-lived than Kilab and Ja'far,

nor than Abu Juz' and my neighbor Hamumah,

    the victim of those two, and the drinker who fell headlong;

nor the two Ahwas, who followed one another on successive nights,

    nor the companion of al-Barrad, who was no novice;

nor the springtime of the destitute, whose loss I suffered

at Dhu 'Alaq—so preserve your modesty and be patient.

Nor Qays ibn Juz', the day he called his companions,

and they wheeled toward him on gaunt, lean steeds.

Death folded him away atop a sleek, long-limbed mare,

skimming with the flutter of a swiftly returning bird.

    وَما كانَ وَقّافاً بِدارِ مُعَصَّرِ

    He lay through the night, while the company rode on at night's end;

he had never loitered at a nubile maiden's house.

And at al-Fawrah, 'Amir, the fierce warrior, the man of bounty:

how fine a light for the night visitor seeking fire!

And how fine a lodging for a neighbor who settled in his house,

when the young maiden awoke unveiled!

And the man of generosity, resolve, and openhandedness:

    'Ubaydah, and the protector in every strait;

    مَتى يَدعُ مَولاهُ إِلى النَصرِ يُنصَرِ

    and Salma—Salma was a man of generosity and gifts;

whenever his ally calls for help, he receives it.

And Tufayl's dwelling, where he lies at al-Junaynah,

and Suhayl's dwelling, which you know, at Saw'ar:

I never saw a day with so many mourners,

and fair women rising from spacious leather tents.

Every noble woman wets the scratches on her face,

matron and maiden beneath a curtained howdah.

And at al-Jarr, east of Hars, lies a warrior,

    brave, a man of resolve among his people, resourceful;

a blazing brand of war, whose steeds are ever

in bands, moving smoothly like sandgrouse setting out early.

And the lord of Malhub, whose fatal day bereaved us,

and at al-Rida', the dwelling of another man rich in bounty.

Weep for those men—may you have no father!—and lament

Abu Hazim on every memorable day.

Praise escorted them, and their graves were adorned

by the choicest fragrant herbs on a flowering plain.

And the gray-haired sons of Ma' al-Sama' and their beardless youths:

after them, is anyone immortal or long-lived?

And those among their brothers and sons who died,

mature men and young men, like the jinn of 'Abqar:

they went before us; the straight road to them

is clear from those who went before, and does not turn aside.

How much splendor and fine appearance I have seen,

and how many an unlocker of chains for the shackled captive!

And how many kings and commoners I have seen,

and riding-camels fitted with ornamented saddles!

And Time's daughters consumed the lords of Na'it,

at their listening-post and lookout beneath the sky.

And they bereaved his people of al-Harith, the warrior,

though, had he roused them, they would have come with mighty aid.

One day they destroyed the lord of Kindah and his son,

and the lord of Ma'add between Khabt and 'Ar'ar.

And they brought the Dumi down from his fortress's summit,

and lowered the lord of al-Mushaqqar by ropes.

They left Quss's 'Would that I...' and 'If only I...' unfulfilled,

and the wisdom of foresight proved powerless for Luqman.

So if you ask us what our condition is, we are

sparrows among these creatures that need food and drink.

Slaves to the tribe of Himyar if they take power,

and the officials of Kisra and Caesar oppress us.

We and they belong to Himyar through conquest,

and we have no masters other than Himyar.

    Seventy Tubba' kings before Tubba'

all departed, one radiant ruler after another.

We settle lands that were all settled before us,

and hope for survival after 'Ad and Himyar.

We and brothers of ours who have gone in succession

are like one leaving at dawn and one departing in midday heat.

Is the soul anything but a borrowed enjoyment,

lent, then returning to its owner after a span of months?
