دَعيleave off اللَومَblame أَوor بينيdepart كَشِقِّlike one half of صَديعِa torn garment
فَقَدfor indeed لُمتِyou blamed قَبلَbefore اليَومِtoday غَيرَone who is not مُطيعِobedient
Leave off blame, or part from me like one half of a torn garment.
Leave blame aside or split me like a cracked jug,
For before today you have blamed one who will not obey.
For I disobeyed before this day, and was not obedient.
وَإِنand if كُنتِyou were تَهوَينَyou desire الفِراقَseparation فَفارِقيthen depart
لِأَمرِfor a matter of شَتاتٍseparation أَوor لِأَمرِfor a matter of جَميعِunion
And if you desire separation, then depart,
And if you wish to part from me, then part,
whether for a course of separation or one of union.
Due to scattered affairs or for a collective matter.
فَلَوfor if أَنَّنيI ثَمَّرتُmade grow ماليmy wealth وَنَسلَهُand its offspring
وَأَمسَكتُand I withheld إِمساكاًa withholding كَبُخلِlike the stinginess of مَنيعِManiʿ
For had I made my wealth and its offspring grow,
If I had hoarded my wealth and its yield,
and hoarded it with a stinginess like Maniʿ's,
Holding back stingily like a miser.
رَضيتِyou were content بِأَدنىwith the least of عَيشِناour livelihood وَحَمِدتِناand you praised us
إِذاwhen صَدَرَتyou returned after drinking عَنfrom قارِصٍsour milk وَنَقيعِand fresh milk
you would have been content with our humblest fare and praised us,
You would have been content with our meager living and thanked me
when you had drunk your fill of sour milk and fresh milk.
If I acted meanly and was ungenerous.
وَلَكِنَّbut ماليmy wealth غالَهُconsumed it كُلُّevery جَفنَةٍserving-bowl
إِذاwhen حانَbecame due وِردٌa turn to drink أَسبَلَتstreamed بِدُموعِwith tears
But my wealth has been consumed by every serving-bowl
But my wealth - every blink wasted it
that, when the time to drink came, streamed with tears,
When the time of giving came, I poured it out in tears.
وَإِعطائِيَand my giving المَولىthe kinsman عَلىat حينِthe time of فَقرِهِhis poverty
إِذاwhen قالَhe said أَبصِرlook upon خَلَّتيmy need وَخُشوعيand my humility
and by my giving to a kinsman in his hour of poverty,
And giving to my Master in His time of need
when he said, 'Look upon my need and my humility.'
When He says "Look upon my isolation and humility."
وَخَصمٍand an opposing band كَناديlike an assembly of الجِنِّthe jinn أَسقَطتُI brought down شَأوَهُمtheir reach
بِمُستَحصِدٍwith a tightly woven argument ذيpossessing مِرَّةٍstrength وَصُروعِand overthrowing force
And adversaries like an assembly of jinn—I brought their ambitions low
I dropped the hostility of adversaries like Jinn's shouting
with a tightly woven argument, strong and able to overthrow,
With a harvester having bitterness and leanness.
كَخَصمِlike the opposing band of بَنيthe sons of بَدرٍBadr غَداةَon the morning لَقيتُهُمI met them
وَمِنand from قَبلُbefore قَدalready قَوَّمتُI straightened دَرءَthe crookedness of رَبيعِRabiʿ
as with my opponents, Banu Badr, the morning I met them;
Like the adversaries of Badr's sons, the morning I met them
and before that, I had straightened Rabiʿ's crookedness.
And before that I had set right warding off of spring.
