Foolishly you reproached me and spoke, though I was blameless;
And your weeping of old was not truly wise.

Umm al-Walid, whoever has you as his concern
Awakes without sound judgment in his own affairs.

Then move away among Amir and Tamim.

Iram, and assailed Himyar with a mighty blow?

At al-Hinw, O Umaym, abiding in a grave.

Though he had enjoyed strength and ease.

He fashioned iron into coats of mail to guard himself,
To gain long life, safe from assault.

Surrendered to them by an inevitable, settled decree.

So leave reproach—woe to another, not you!—for
Bounty is not won by blaming every generous man.

Or a far-off tract, whose reaches were lavishly watered by
A smooth, rain-bearing cloud and the coursing of stars.

Highbred and sound, like a spear's upper shaft.

He sipped at watering places, never denied his share.
