صَديقُكَ حينَ تَستَغي كَثيرٌ

صَديقُكَ حينَ تَستَغي كَثيرٌ

وَما لَكَ عِندَ فَقرِكَ مِن صَديقِ

وَما لَكَ عِندَ فَقرِكَ مِن صَديقِ

Your friends are many when you are well-off;

When you are rich, friends for you there are many

but in your poverty you have no friend.

Yet when you are poor, there is no friend for thee

فَلا تُنكِر عَلى أَحَدٍ إِذا ما

فَلا تُنكِر عَلى أَحَدٍ إِذا ما

طَوى عَنكَ الزِيارَةَ عِندَ ضيقِ

طَوى عَنكَ الزِيارَةَ عِندَ ضيقِ

So do not reproach anyone if

So blame not anyone, if someday

he withholds his visits from you in hardship.

They stop visiting you in time of need

وَكُنتُ إِذا الصَديقُ أَرادَ غَيظي

وَكُنتُ إِذا الصَديقُ أَرادَ غَيظي

عَلى حَنَقٍ وَأَشرَقَني بِريقي

عَلى حَنَقٍ وَأَشرَقَني بِريقي

And whenever a friend sought to anger me,

And I, when a friend wished to make me angry

in anger, and made me choke on my own saliva,

Stayed patient, though provoked, not wanting enmity

غَفَرتُ ذُنوبَهُ وَصَفَحتُ عَنهُ

غَفَرتُ ذُنوبَهُ وَصَفَحتُ عَنهُ

مَخافَةَ أَن أَكونَ بِلا صَديقِ

مَخافَةَ أَن أَكونَ بِلا صَديقِ

I would forgive his sins and pardon him,

I forgave his sins and overlooked his wrongs

for fear that I might be without a friend.

Fearing that without him, a friend I'd never see
