Whose are the dwellings at the stony rise of al-Ḥannān,

then the stony hills, then the uplands of Udmān?

Their dwellings lie deserted; their traces have been altered,

after their inhabitants departed, by the succession of ages.

So I halted my two companions there, where there was no

livestock, O ʿAzz, nor any human being,

only gazelles, whose cries there seemed like

bowstrings striking the sides of shiryān-wood bows.

Whenever I visit a place of hers at the stony rise of Wāsiṭ,

then at Lubayna's sandy bend, the dwelling makes me weep.

Then they departed one early morning and abandoned it,

while my heart is a hostage with ʿAzza, captive.

Her laden camels indeed outstripped you on the day they drew up

at al-Furʿ, between Khafaynan and Diʿān.

So my heart inclines toward them, as though

they were pulling it with the tugs of long well-ropes.

The phantom of ʿAzza's household visited late at night,

after all was still, and stirred my sorrows.

Her phantom came visiting from the folk of al-Buwayb,

at the night-camp of one of the folk of Dhū Dharwān.

The Ḥājibī woman was brought back to him, after

the windblown dust had raced over the stony ground of the watercourses.

And indeed I swore to her a truthful oath,

by God, at the sacred precincts of the All-Merciful,

by the she-camels dancing despite their weariness at evening,

passing over the beds of algae in al-Ẓahrān.
