My camels refused the water of al-Radah and were worn down

by the cousins guarding the cooled, drawn water.

They withhold the water only out of jealous concern

for Usra's rocky tracts, whose thorn-growth has worn thin.

So she returned, without pressing him for his surplus water—

Riyah—no watering for him!—son of Talq, son of As'ad.

Whenever she reached Raghba on her watering day—

my young she-camel—he called for denying her water and stood inert.

For I am indeed too ashamed before you to condemn you,

and I honor myself too much to praise you while you do wrong.
