Is it for a ruin whose standing remains the tribe has deserted,

whose dwellings stir the yearning man's sorrows,

that you wept? What makes you weep over a campsite's traces,

ravaged by the north wind's abundant rain and downpours?

May Salma's dwelling, on the slope of Ruwawa,

as far as al-Qahb, be watered by generous showers and torrents.

Though Su'da did not prolong her stay there,

nor will Su'da's people ever dwell there again.

And I am indeed content with such a share of your favors

that, if the talebearer saw it, his anxieties would be stilled:

with 'No,' with 'I cannot,' and with hopes,

and promises and postponement, of which their hopeful seeker has wearied.

And love for you makes me forget what is in my hand,

and distracts me from everything I undertake.

One tenderly devoted to you will perish in this world

when his destroyer among time's calamities strikes him down.

    وَلِلناسِ أَشغالٌ وَحُبُّكِ شاغِلُه

    And he conceals deep love for you, and fear;

others have their concerns, and love for you is his.

A noble man, he buries the secret so completely that he seems,

when they press him for news of you, to know nothing of it.

He wishes evening would find him ill, hoping that she,

on hearing of his illness, might send him word.

And he delights in kindness in his pursuit of honor,

so that one day his virtues may be praised before Layla.

Your secret is guarded in the hidden depths of heart and breast

by one devoted to you, whose treachery need not be feared.

And I hide part of my secret even from myself, out of dignity,

when its keeper divulges the secret among people.

For if I were in fetters and confided my anguish

to them, their chains would groan in pity for me.

And if a beast grazed on growth watered by my tears,

it would stir pity in the beast as it ate it.

Another wins his share from someone other than you

through my poetry, while what I seek through it eludes me.

So may poems never bring low, after me and you,

a lover; and may poetry and its maker die after me.
