By my life, you truly alarmed me that morning at Suwayqa,
by your departure, O ʿAzza, with a grieving man’s full dread.

Her caravan sped past, as though it were
sail-bearing ships surging along at al-Kiryawn.
وَحاجَةِand many a desire نَفسٍof the soul قَدindeed قَضَيتُI fulfilled وَحاجَةٍand many a desire

Many a heart’s desire I have fulfilled, and another
left aside, and many a rare thing attained.

And many a well—as though Yathrib-made arrows had shed their points
in its depths—its water drawn up, surging at the trough’s inlet.

And I met a prowling wolf, whose howl was like
the weeping of a destitute outcast seeking a night’s shelter.

He howled, his chest jutting, his belly drawn in,
struggling through a bitter-cold night with hunger.

Then he cried aloud, calling to one enduring hunger,
bowed in the joints, moving with neck outstretched.

Yet he found only the night-halt of a rider
who lingered briefly, then journeyed on by night with a whip,

and the imprint of a lean she-camel upon her calloused pads,
patient with rough halting grounds, strongly built,

and the place where the rein’s coils lay, like
the tracks of a snake lying outstretched on the open ground.
