أَلاBehold! تِلكَthat one عَزَّةُʿAzza قَدindeed أَصبَحَتshe has become
تُقَلِّبُshe turns لِلهَجرِbecause of separation طَرفاًan eye غَضيضاdowncast
Behold, there is ʿAzza, now
Alas! That same pride has now become
turning a downcast eye because of separation.
Turning away a tender, tearful glance;
تَقولُshe says مَرِضناwe fell ill فَماyet not عُدتَناyou visited us
فَقُلتُso I said لَهاto her لاnot أُطيقُI am able النُهوضاgetting up
She says, “We fell ill, yet you did not visit us.”
And saying, "We are sick," but comes not nigh.
So I said to her, “I cannot get up.”
I said, "I have no strength left to advance."
كِلاناboth of us مَريضانِtwo sick people فيin بَلدَةٍa town
وَكَيفَand how يَعودُvisits مَريضٌa sick person مَريضاa sick person
Both of us are ill in the same town;
Both sick are we in the same little town,
and how can a sick person visit another?
And how should a sick man on a sick man rely?
