And on the day of battle, the day of spear-thrusts, when they were clothed—
The day of battle, the day of thrusting spears, when arrayed,
The white-footed horses of the clash and their solid-colored fellows—
The horses of the battlefield, draped in mail, and their valiant riders,
مِنَfrom الماءِthe water لَوناًa color واحِداًone فَتَشابَهَتso they became alike
وَغَيرَand changed أَلوانthe colors of الجِيادِthe steeds حَميمُهاtheir sweat
In a single hue from the water, so that they looked alike,
Were of one color by the water, so they appeared alike,
And their sweat changed the steeds' colors;
Except for the varied hues of the steeds and their heroic spirit.

And toward a gray host, its millstone firmly set—
They charged towards the ever-turning millstone of fate,
A helmeted host—came another whose stars were fading.
Veiled by another like a fixed star that loses its radiance.

And hands and feet flew amid the blows,
Arms and legs flew amidst the blows,
And necks met their doom, their amulets not fastened.
And necks that had no talismans fell.
وَإِنّيand indeed I بِخَيرٍin good condition ماas long as بَقيتَyou remain alive وَماand as long as وَلِيtook charge of

And indeed I fare well as long as you live, and as long as someone takes charge of
As long as you remain, good continues for me whatever befalls me,
The spear-shaft of guidance—a leader from among you who keeps it upright.
For you are the channel of guidance - may you always uphold it!
