And indeed I aspire to union with the woman

whose remembrance and visits to her bring healing.

And if she stays hidden, she is a delight to your eyes,

and if she appears one day, no disgrace of hers will overwhelm you.

Among the fair, modest women, she has known no hardship,

and her lineage belongs to pure, exalted nobility.

For no meadow on rugged ground, lush with growth,

whose jathjath shrubs and ‘arār flowers spill out dew,

in an open stretch of a valley’s bed, as though—

as though perfumers and their merchants had gathered there,

with musk bestowed upon it until it resembles

a Darin merchant’s perfume caravan, its fragrance bursting forth,

is sweeter-scented than ‘Azza’s sleeves late at night,

when her fire has been kindled with moist sandalwood.

She is life on any day she meets you with her love,

and death when her turning away is what meets you.

And I, though she is far away, am surely faithful

to her, wherever she alights and establishes her dwelling.

So I have sworn: I will not forget you while I live, not for a single night,

    even if the dwelling is distant and the place to visit her far away;

and as long as the shimmering mirage races, and as long as there run

    over the pale hills their wild beasts and skittish animals;

and as long as the winds blow, coursing, and as long as there remain

standing in Najd, its ‘Awf and its Ti‘ār.
