غى بعرعار ولدة مذعورا

Where no bows are twanged, nor is it

Where the stubborn does not pulse or vanish

harried into fright by children's cries of 'ʿArʿār';

With the clamor of a terrified newborn

وكأن الشوى تزين منه

وكأن الشوى تزين منه

بثرى الحص أو أمس عبيرا

بثرى الحص أو أمس عبيرا

And its limbs seem adorned

As if grief adorns itself with

with saffron dust, or touched with perfume,

The dust of pebbles or the fragrance of yesterday

ارجاً من رضاب ما يعبأ الغيث

بملقى بعاعه مرورا

بملقى بعاعه مرورا

fragrant with the nectar of what the rain gathers

Hoping for the rain’s pleasure

where it sheds its burden in passing.

Not bothered by where its showers pass
