ولم تُندِّ عصوب كفَّ معتصبِ
When the milch camels began the day with their udder-bands cast off,
When the pollen becomes rendezvous I persist with it
and no thigh-bound she-camel moistened her milker's palm,
And do not lament with a clenched fist or weeping eyes

وضَنَّ من قدره ذو القِدر بالعُقَبِ
and the wind came from the western quarter,
And the wind comes from the direction of its sunset
and the pot's owner grudged the broth left in his pot,
And the one with power laments his fate with bare feet

واستدفأ الكلب في المأسور ذي الذِّئبِ
and the cold-stricken night traveler blew into his hand,
And the one wearing fine clothes laughs with might
and the dog sought warmth in the hollow of the lashed saddle.
And the dog takes warmth beside the chained wolf
