أفيwas it on يومthe day of النُساءةal-Nusāʾa فارقوناthey parted from us
أفي يوم النُساءة فارقونا
بلاwithout دمنgrudges تعدُّto be counted ولاnor ذحولِblood-feuds
بلا دمن تعدُّ ولا ذحولِ
Was it on the day of al-Nusāʾa that they parted from us,
with no grudges to count, nor any blood-feuds,
سوىexcept قدحa lot-arrow تأخرwas delayed بعدafter قدحa lot-arrow
سوى قدح تأخر بعد قدح
تذُّنبfault-finding مقصرينthose who fell short علىagainst مطيلone who excelled
تذُّنب مقصرين على مطيل
save a lot-arrow drawn later than another—
the fault-finding of those who fell short against one who excelled?
ويامنتand headed toward Yemen الأشاعرthe Ashāʿir فهيso they are مناin relation to us
ويامنت الأشاعر فهي منا
بمنزلةin the position of الضريبthe lot-drawer منin relation to الوكيلthe overseer
بمنزلة الضريب من الوكيل
And the Ashāʿir headed toward Yemen; so they are to us
as the lot-drawer is to the overseer.
