ولاand not الفوقthe broken-nocked arrows مماfrom what حشوتyou packed الجفيراthe quiver
ولا الفوق مما حشوت الجفيرا
So you nocked before me arrows that were not featherless,
I have attained my desire, though not by the commonly trod path,
Nor broken-nocked, from those you packed into the quiver,
Nor above, from what I heaped up in the pitcher.

Raised high, like the rain-bringing rise of al-Simāk,
Raised up like the Pleiades at nightfall
And coinciding with one month's beginning at another month's end.
And the horizon of the new moon rising at nightfall.

And your rising, when you rose, was not for me
Your origin was not for me when you came into being,
Like al-Zabānī's rise—dust and swirling tumult;
Like the Pleiades, confused and wavering.

But your star is Saʿd al-Suʿūd:
But your star, Fortunate One,
You covered my land with copious, pouring rain.
Rained down upon my land copious, gentle rain.
