Indeed, I do not see the days' wonders exhausted

By their length, nor the calamities of events coming to an end.

Nor does anyone understand the days' lessons, one

Through another, except the discerning among people.

I have seen a man's speech only as his arrows:

Shot by him and for him, some missing and some striking.

No loss people suffer equals the loss of their minds,

Nor has any earner acquired a gain to equal them.

Nor are people excluded from anything like a plan

From which their wisest was absent when it was proposed.

Nor from a summit's smooth rock that slips beneath a shod man,

Its mountains and ravines tossing him about.

    وزينةُ أخلاق الرجال وظوبها

    Exposing a man's words as folly shames his judgment;

The ornament of men's virtues is their constancy.

A people's most foolish ignorance concerns their enemy,

And men's ugliest traits are those gone astray.

I have seen the robes of forbearance, a source of strength

For the forbearing man: stripped of them, he is naked though clothed.

I have not seen evil's gate easy for its people,

Nor kindness's paths with dunes difficult to traverse.

A man's undoing most often comes from where he feels secure,

And most of men's ties prove deceptive.

    ولكنما اقذاؤها ما ينوبها

    I have not found branches themselves to be eyesores;

Their irritants are only what befalls them:

Injustice, or people riding against their own people,

Behind the enemies, a league of eager conspirators.

Quraysh shot at me from bows of hostility

And rancor, as though she did not know I was her kinsman.

Sometimes she shoots around me, and sometimes strikes me

With arrows of harm, unprovoked—may her Reckoner repay her.

Yet I was a soothing draught when she choked on a mouthful

Whose burden would overwhelm any healer but her own.

How much I cherished what lay between me and her!

Her south wind was not, to me, like the west wind.

I did not fail to recognize the rain that nurtured me,

Nor did I plead for her lowering clouds to come.

    ولا ذنب للأبواب مرتٌ جديبها

    At their doorways I found myself in a rainless tract;

No fault of the doors: its barren ground was parched.

Yet the farthest outsider has verdant valleys,

Where tall stalks rise like a camel's hump.

They hurled afflictions at me from every side,

And vicious slander—the youths of Fihr and her graybeards.

Without proof, only the tales of a liar

Who goads the forest's lions, massing their assaults.

By my father's life, the enemies between me and her

Have indeed found listening ears that answer them.

You will find those ears only obedient

To her in assent, or resentful at heart.

In every land I visit, must I live

In fear of Fihr's sons, as though I were its stranger?

Though I belong to the clan's very stock,

The people's faces turn toward me reluctantly, frowning.

Sons of Murr's daughter, where is Murra, away from you

And us—she whose branches become one people?

Where is her son, away from us and you, and her husband,

Khuzayma, when kinship's paths are rugged to traverse?

If we cannot obtain from you the right of brotherhood,

A brotherhood with no deceit feared within its bosoms,

What kinship, then, offers refuge through its virtue?

And what kinship receives its rightful share?

For us, the nearest bond of blood; for others, with you,

Great buckets of ample gifts and brimming pails.

You filled the pools of those who wage war upon you,

While the scars of your deeds among us still ooze blood.

You will encounter what you wished upon your enemy

Upon yourselves, when the horses' furious ones rise.

I have seen no conduct in you other than this,

Nor any bounty except one I cannot fault.

You filled the earth's broad passes with justice and compassion,

Yet its ample reaches fail me, though not from incapacity.

You cut off my tongue against an enemy who reaches you

With his scorpions, their stinging and their creeping.

So I became tongue-tied and silenced; my disposition

Has a companion sworn to silence and faltering speech.

Let your kinship ties not pursue you, for they

Are long delayed, though their seeker has not slept at night.

Whenever evil's chard springs up between us,

You turn toward it until its stalk is cut.

So that the kinship of Lu'ayy son of Ghalib abandons us,

Like Sama, when she perished and her Utayb perished.

Where, then, is religion's service for us and you?

Each has hands that hold back their blended milk.

Yet you seek no recompense for a favor,

While others who bestow a favor seek repayment.

    يقصِّرُ عنكم بالسُعاة لغوبها

    Indeed, you possess a surpassing distinction in virtue;

Your rivals' weariness leaves them short of you.

We gathered souls thirsting for you,

And hearts within us whose throbbing endured long.

So we are an eggshell, one day, and you—

Sons of Abd Shams, if you return—its chick.

Can a beloved's departure be anything but separation?

Yes: it is a soul's sickness when its beloved departs.

Yet patience away from a brother who harms you

Is consolation when the yearning soul cries out.

I have found that, if fresh water is barred,

Its brackish water suffices for what cannot be avoided.

If there is no mount but spearpoints,

The displaced man has no counsel but to ride them.

    فأنىَّ لنا بالصاب أني مشوبها

    They blend a honey-sweet disposition for the farthest outsiders;

But for us, why bitter sap, their blend steeped to the full?

Eat what you have of hump and withers,

When Dudan's absent ones are hidden from you.

Souls among you will remember us, and eyes

Streaming, not stinting their floods of tears.

When the earth lays us to rest, if she buries us,

And the grave afflictions of affairs have subsided.

We left you the ravine's circling place, our dwelling,

And the place where sacrificial beasts' flanks fall.

And the sacred site of Jam', and al-Maghad at evening,

When its setting soon screens off the sun.

And Hira's resting-place, and all the broad streambeds,

And where Thawr's heights and their lava fields meet.

And Ukaz, our horses' watering-place, as though they were

Early birds whose foe spent the night in a barren waste.

And Abu Dawud's grave, where mourning cloths were torn

Over him—their striped fabric and fine threads.

As blood-money, paying them in advance as their guarantor.

Bounties not gathered three and four at a time

Through importunate requests of many different kinds.

When you drove out, from all Tihama,

Houses whose lineage was nearest to yours,

You rushed against us in every east and west:

Upon us, meant for us—your claws and their gouges.

On a moonlit night, can the pursued escape?

Fihr son of Malik rebukes me for defending her,

Yet she knows not the faults that leanness conceals.

If a people's kinsman could die from sincere counsel,

Her Death would indeed have met me with deadly fates.

If sincere counsel granted its giver immortality,

I would have life in abundance as long as her Asib stands.

She disobeyed me; her led mount would not yield to obedience.

Even if their offenses, in my eyes and against me, abound.
