If the young people pledged allegiance

The gray-haired would give ages for their share
The elderly would give the youth
Of youth and life within it—many ages for one.
Their share, and live honestly with them.

A day of youth is bought with a month of gray old age,
A day of youth equals a month of old age gained,
With more besides, as the wealthy man bids higher.
With a bonus from the elevation of aspirations.

And I have worn the robes of both kinds,
Of many sorts, and have tried earnestness and play.
Diverse, and tasted seriousness and play.
