لعمري لقوم المرء خير بقية

عليه وإن عالوا به كل مركبِ

عليه وإن عالوا به كل مركبِ

By my life, a man's own people show the greatest compassion

For life, a man's people are his best legacy

toward him, even if they make him ride every difficult course.

Though they ride every ship against him

إذا كنت في قوم عدي لست منهم

إذا كنت في قوم عدي لست منهم

فكل ما عُلِفتَ من خبيث وطيّبِ

فكل ما عُلِفتَ من خبيث وطيّبِ

If you are among people unrelated to you, not one of them,

If you are among the hostile people, you are not one of them

then eat whatever you are fed, foul and good alike.

So feed on the good and bad they offer

وإن حدثتك النفس إنك قادر

وإن حدثتك النفس إنك قادر

على ما حوت أيدي الرجال فجرِّبِ

على ما حوت أيدي الرجال فجرِّبِ

And if your soul tells you that you are capable

And if your soul tells you that you're able

of attaining what men's hands hold, then try.

To do what men's hands can do, then try it
