O you who reproach me over my loss, come to your senses!

For you have made me choke on my saliva with reproach.

Indeed, I have sworn not to grieve after Bishr

For any living person who dies, nor for a friend.

No, by your father, I shall not grieve after Bishr

For any living person who dies, nor for a friend.

And after noble ʿAlqamah, son of Bishr,

When souls leapt up to the throats,

And after the sons of Dubayʿah around Bishr,

Like tree trunks toppled by fire.

And the sons of Dubayʿah toppled after Bishr,

As tree trunks toppled from the throats.

Deaths were decreed for them at Wālibah,

Beside Qulāb, for the doom brought upon them.

For how many limbs of a noble man lie at Qulāb—

A man of trust—and how many a cleft skull!

Drinking companions to kings whenever they met them,

They received gifts and were served pure wine from their cup.

    فَما يَنساغُ لي مِن بَعدُ ريقي

    They cut off noses and severed them completely;

So since then, my saliva will not go down.
