إِنّي مِنَ النَفَرِ المُحمَرِّ أَعينُهُم

إِنّي مِنَ النَفَرِ المُحمَرِّ أَعينُهُم

أَهلِ السَوامِ وَأَهلِ الصَخرِ وَاللوبِ

أَهلِ السَوامِ وَأَهلِ الصَخرِ وَاللوبِ

I am of the band whose eyes are red,

I am of the red-eyed tribe,

Keepers of grazing herds, dwellers among rocks and lava fields,

People of the left hand and people of the rock and twist,

الطاعِنينَ نُحورَ الخَيلِ مُقبِلَةً

الطاعِنينَ نُحورَ الخَيلِ مُقبِلَةً

بِكُلِّ سَمراءَ لَم تُعلَب وَمَعلوبِ

بِكُلِّ سَمراءَ لَم تُعلَب وَمَعلوبِ

Who spear the throats of horses as they charge,

Thrusting at the chests of horses coming head on

With every brown spear, unbound or sinew-bound.

With every brown Indian sword unsheathed and sheathed,

وَقَد بَلَوتُم فَأَبلَوكُم بَلائَهُمُ

وَقَد بَلَوتُم فَأَبلَوكُم بَلائَهُمُ

يَومَ الحُرَيرَةِ ضَرباً غَيرَ مَكذوبِ

يَومَ الحُرَيرَةِ ضَرباً غَيرَ مَكذوبِ

You have tested them, and they have made you feel their prowess,

And you have tested us, so we tested you with their testing,

On the day of al-Hurayra, with blows that were no lie.

The day of Hurayra with a beating no pretense,

إِن توعِدوني فَإِنّي لِاِبنُ عَمِّكُمُ

إِن توعِدوني فَإِنّي لِاِبنُ عَمِّكُمُ

وَقَد أَصابوكُمُ مِنهُ بِشُؤبوبِ

وَقَد أَصابوكُمُ مِنهُ بِشُؤبوبِ

If you threaten me, I am indeed your cousin,

If you threaten me, I am the cousin of your cousin,

And they have already struck you with a downpour of such blows.

And they have struck you from him with great misfortune,

وَإِنَّ وَرقاءَ قَد أَردى أَبا كَنَفٍ

وَإِنَّ وَرقاءَ قَد أَردى أَبا كَنَفٍ

وَاِبنَي إِياسٍ وَعَمرا وَاِبنَ أَيّوبِ

وَاِبنَي إِياسٍ وَعَمرا وَاِبنَ أَيّوبِ

And Warqa’ has indeed slain Abu Kanaf,

Warqa has killed Abu Canaf

And the two sons of Iyas, and Amr, and the son of Ayyub.

And the two sons of Iyas and Amr and son of Ayyub,

وَإِنَّ عُثمانَ قَد أَردى ثَمانِيَةً

وَإِنَّ عُثمانَ قَد أَردى ثَمانِيَةً

مِنكُم وَأَنتُم عَلى خُبرٍ وَتَجريبِ

مِنكُم وَأَنتُم عَلى خُبرٍ وَتَجريبِ

And Uthman has indeed slain eight

And Uthman has killed eight of you

Of you—and you know it from experience.

While you are in the know and trial,

لاقَتهُمُ مِنهُمُ آسادُ مَلحَمَةٍ

لاقَتهُمُ مِنهُمُ آسادُ مَلحَمَةٍ

لَيسوا بِزُرّاعَةٍ عوجِ العَراقيبِ

لَيسوا بِزُرّاعَةٍ عوجِ العَراقيبِ

Lions of battle from their ranks confronted them,

Whom the 'Asads met in battle

They are no farmers with crooked hocks.

No squinting at twisted plowing trails,

فَالآنَ إِن تُقبِلوا نَأخُذ نُحورَكُمُ

فَالآنَ إِن تُقبِلوا نَأخُذ نُحورَكُمُ

وَإِن تُباهوا فَإِنّي غَيرُ مَغلوبِ

وَإِن تُباهوا فَإِنّي غَيرُ مَغلوبِ

So now, if you advance, we shall seize your throats;

So now if you confront I take your lives

And if you vie in boasting, I am not to be outdone.

And if you rebel, I am not to be subdued.
