وَحَيُّand the clan of بَنيthe sons of كِنانَةَKinanah إِذwhen أُثيرواthey were roused
Have you not heard what Quraysh endured,
Did not the news reach you of what Quraysh faced,
and the clan of Banu Kinanah, when they were roused?
And the clan of Kinanah, when we attacked them,
دَهَمناهُمwe fell upon them بِأَرعَنَwith a vast host مُكفَهِرٍّgrim and forbidding
فَظَلَّso it continued لَناfor us بِعَقوَتِهِمin their courtyard زَئيرُa roar
We fell upon them with a towering, grim host,
With growling lions in the early gloom -
so our roar kept resounding in their courtyard.
Their wailing was our music at daybreak.
نُقَوِّمُwe straighten مارِنَthe pliant part of الخَطِيِّthe Khatt spear فيهِمin them
يَجيءُcomes عَلىupon أَسِنَّتِناour spearheads الجَزيرُbutchered flesh
We straighten the pliant shafts of Khatt spears in them;
We straighten the bent spear shafts back to true
butchered flesh comes upon our spearheads.
And death comes to them on our whetted blades.

The people of Wajj will be told whom you concealed,
The young warriors of Wajj will tell their kin
and the graves will reproach whoever visits them.
Of those whose graves are still mourned over.
