لَقَدindeed عَلِمَتhas learned أُمُّmother of الأُدَيبِرِal-Udaybir أَنَّنيthat I
أَقولُI say لَهاto her هَدّيbe gentle وَلاand do not تَذخَريspare لَحميmy flesh
Umm al-Udaybir knows well that I
tell her, 'Be gentle, and do not spare my flesh;
فَإِنَّfor indeed غَداًtomorrow إِنif لاnot نَجِدwe find بَعضَsome of زادِناour provisions
نُفِىءwe shall win as booty لَكِfor you زاداprovisions أَوor نُعَدِّكِwe shall put you off بِالأَزمِwith fasting
for tomorrow, if we fail to find some of our provisions,
we shall win you food as booty, or put you off with fasting.'
إِذاwhen هِيَshe حَنَّتyearned لِلهَوىfor desire حَنَّmoaned جَوفُهاher belly
كَجَوفِlike the belly of البَعيرِthe camel قَلبُهاher heart غَيرُnot ذيpossessing عَزمِresolve
When she yearns for what she craves, her belly moans
like a camel's belly; her heart has no resolve.
فَلاso no وَأَبيكِand by your father الخَيرَthe good لاnot تَجِدينَهُyou will find him
No, by your good father, you will not find him
gracious in prosperity, nor patient in want,
وَلاnor بَطَلاًa champion إِذاwhen الكُماةُthe armored warriors تَزَيَّنواadorn themselves
لَدىamid غَمَراتِthe surges of المَوتِdeath بِالحالِكِwith pitch-black blood الفَدمِthick
nor a champion when the armored warriors adorn themselves
amid death's surges, with thick, black blood.
أَبَعدَis it after بَلائيmy striving ضَلَّتِmay she lose her way to البَيتَthe house مِنthrough عَمىًblindness
تُحِبُّshe desires فِراقيseparation from me أَوor يَحِلُّis lawful لَهاfor her شَتميreviling me
After all my striving—may she lose her way home in blindness—
does she wish to leave me, or is reviling me lawful for her?
وَإِنّيand indeed I لَأُثوىI surely lodge الجوعَhunger حَتّىuntil يَمَلَّنيit tires of me
فَيَذهَبَthen it departs لَمnot يَدنَسit sullied ثِيابيmy clothes وَلاnor جِرمىmy body
I indeed give hunger lodging until it tires of me,
then leaves, having sullied neither my clothes nor my body.
وَأَغتَبِقand I drink at evening الماءَthe water القَراحَpure فَأَنتَهىthen I stop
إِذاwhen الزادَthe provisions أَمسىhave become by evening لِلمُزَلَّجِfor the ignoble man ذاpossessing طَعمِflavor
I drink pure water at evening and stop there,
when, by evening, food is savory to the ignoble man.
أَرُدُّI ward off شُجاعَthe serpent of البَطنِthe belly قَدsurely تَعلَمينَهُyou know it
وَأوثِرُand I favor غَيريothers than myself مِنamong عِيالِكِyour dependents بِالطُعمِwith food
I ward off the belly's serpent—you well know it—
and feed others of your household before myself,
مَخافَةَfor fear أَنthat أَحياI might live بِرَغمٍin humiliation وَذِلَّةٍand abasement
وَلَلمَوتُand indeed death خَيرٌis better مِنthan حَياةٍa life عَلىin رَغمِhumiliation
for fear that I might live in humiliation and abasement;
and death is surely better than life in humiliation.
رَأَتshe saw رَجُلاًa man قَدalready لَوَّحَتهُhad wasted him مَخامِصٌbouts of hunger
وَطافَتand she circled بِرَنّانِaround one resounding in المَعَدَّينِboth flanks ذيpossessing شَحمِfat
She saw a man whom bouts of hunger had wasted,
and circled around a fat man with resounding flanks,
غَذِيِّnourished on لِقاحٍmilch camels لاnot يَزالُhe ceases كَأَنَّهُas though he were
حَميتٌa butter-skin بِدَبغٍwith tanning material عَظمُهُhis bones غَيرُnot ذيhaving حَجمِprominence
fed on milch camels' milk, forever seeming
a butter-skin full of tanning matter, his bones not showing.
تَقولُshe says فَلَولاthen, but for أَنتَyou أُنكِحتُI would have been wed to سَيِّداa lord
I would be escorted as a bride إِلَيهِto him حُمِلتُI would be carried عَلىon قَرمِa noble camel-stallion
She says, 'But for you, I would have been wed to a lord,
escorted to him as a bride, carried on a noble camel-stallion.'
لَعَمريby my life لَقَدindeed مُلِّكتِyou were given control of أَمرَكِyour affairs حِقبَةًfor a stretch
زَماناof time فَهَلّاso why did you not مِستِstrut فيin العَقمِbrocade وَالرَقمِand patterned cloth
By my life, you were given control of your affairs for a stretch
of time—why did you not strut in brocade and patterned cloth?
فَجاءَتso she came كَخاصيlike the castrator of العَيرِthe ass لَمnot تَحلَshe wore as adornment جاجَةًa glass bead
وَلاnor عاجَةًan ivory bracelet مِنهاof hers تَلوحُgleaming عَلىagainst وَشمِa tattoo
So she came like one who gelds an ass, wearing no glass bead,
nor an ivory bracelet of hers gleaming against a tattoo.
أَفاطِمَO Fatim إِنّيindeed I أَسبِقُI outstrip الحَتفَdeath مُقبِلاًadvancing
وَأَترُكُand I leave قِرنيmy opponent فيon المَزاحِفِthe battlefields يَستَدميbleeding
O Fatim, I outstrip death as I advance,
and leave my opponent bleeding on the battlefields.
وَلَيلَةِand many a night of دَجنٍclouded darkness مِنin جُمادىJumada سَرَيتُهاI journeyed through it by night
إِذاwhen ماemphatic particle اِستَهَلَّتit broke into rain وَهِيَwhile it ساجِيَةٌwas calm تَهميpoured down
And many a cloud-dark night of Jumada have I journeyed through,
when it broke into rain, calm yet pouring down.
وَشَوطٍand many a race فِضاحٍexposing weakness قَدindeed شَهِدتُI entered مُشايِحاًstriving hard
لِأُدرِكَso I may exact ذَحلاًvengeance أَوor أُشيفَI may draw near عَلىto غُنمِbooty
And many a race that exposes weakness have I entered, striving hard,
to exact vengeance or come within reach of booty,
إِذاwhen اِبتَلَّتbecame soaked الأَقدامُthe feet وَالتَفَّand became tangled تَحتَهاbeneath them
غُثاءٌflotsam كَأَجوازِlike the midsections of المُقَرَّنَةِthe horned vipers الدُهمِthe dark ones
when feet were soaked and beneath them lay tangled
flotsam like the midsections of dark horned vipers.
وَنَعلٍand many a sandal كَأَشلاءِlike the torn limbs of السُمانىquail نَبَذتُهاI cast it away
خِلافَafter نَدىًdew مِنfrom آخِرِthe end of اللَيلِthe night أَورِهمِor light rain
And many a sandal, like a quail's torn limbs, I have cast off
after dew at the night's end, or light rain,
إِذاwhen لِمnot يُنازِعdisputed with جاهِلُthe fool of القَومِthe people ذاthe possessor of النُهىunderstanding
وَبَلَّدَتand crouched low الأَعلامُthe landmarks بِاللَيلِin the night كَالأُكمِlike hillocks
when the band's fool did not dispute with the man of sense,
and the landmarks crouched in the night like hillocks.
تَراهاyou see them صِغاراsmall يَحسِرُgrows weary الطَرفُthe gaze دونَهاbefore reaching them
وَلَوeven if كانَit were طَوداًa towering mountain فَوقَهُon top of it فِرَقُherds of العُصمِwhite-footed ibex
You see them small; the eye wearies before reaching them,
even were it a towering mountain with herds of white-footed ibex on it.
وَإِنّيand indeed I لَأَهديI surely guide القَومَthe people فيin لَيلَةِa night of الدُجىdeep darkness
وَأَرميand I shoot إِذاwhen ماemphatic particle قيلَit is said هَلis there مِنany فَتىًyoung man يَرميwho will shoot
I indeed guide the band on a night of deep darkness,
and shoot when it is said, 'Is there a young man who will shoot?'
وَعادِيَةٍand many a charging band تُلقيcasting off الثِيابَthe garments وَزَعتُهاI checked it
كَرِجلِlike a swarm of الجَرادِthe locusts يَنتَحيmaking for شَرَفَthe crest of الحَزمِthe rocky ridge
And many a charging band, casting off garments, I have checked,
like a locust swarm making for a rocky ridge's crest.
