I praised my God, after Urwah, for the escape of

Khirash—and some evils are easier to bear than others.

So, by God, I shall not forget a slain man whose loss I suffered,

beside Qawsa, as long as I walk upon the earth.

Yes, indeed, wounds heal; and it is only

the nearest grief that preoccupies us, however great what has passed.

And I did not know who cast his cloak over him,

but he was drawn forth from a man of pure nobility.

Nor was he a sluggish-hearted, bloated man

who squandered his youth in fatness and ease.

But bouts of hunger had wrestled with him,

though he was strong, unfailing in springing up.

It was as though they were clutching at a bird,

light in its joints, its bones without flesh.

It races the approach of night, darting swiftly,

urging its wing on by spreading it and drawing it in.
