You gave me a cravat, ash-gray in hue,

Like blossoms in form and foliage.

You scented it with perfume; I fancied that within it

The flowers had a soul that flowed through that fragrance.

This silk, in its fleeting shimmer, mirrors

The flashes of thought between sleep and sleeplessness.

As though an autumn sun had left a twilight glow

And been left as a fragment in that glow.

Or the breeze, with it upon sunset's loom,

Wove middle age, spinning on the horizon.

Or sorrow's garden on a day of darkness, shrouded

By overlapping clouds, in color and pattern.

Or the shadow of great trees upon the pool's water, stirred

By gentle breezes into rapture and unrest.

You gave it to me as an unfading remembrance, and I have

Lodged it where light dwells within the eyes.

I adorned my breast with it, while my soul was adorned

With the love your eyes instill within it.

And life is but a night journey toward a goal,

As though I were walking through it in a tunnel.

And you are this life's star, guiding me

On land and sea, away from wandering and exile.

You sent me a ray that came cutting through

The veils of the unseen, and arrived unpierced.

I lodged it in my breast, content, and it made me drunk

With love; I was content that I had not sobered up from it.

    And love—all the heart's youth—is condensed

In a glance from you toward one who lies in burning anguish.

Your eyes are two cups of immortality's wine; their light

Is the secret of feeling, guarding against the death of love.

They are dawn's two emeralds, and two pearls

Of the sea, and heaven's two stars, dispelling dusk.

And I indeed love your eyes through

All my heart's moods, both wise and reckless.

And the pact between my heart and your glances is

That you leave in it not the slightest breath of life.

And today you have sealed this pact, making

Its pledge a cravat fastened around my neck.
