How can new love avail me, when my heart
Is a heart grown old, as time has willed?
Is as old as time, as fate decrees?

And how can my heart find yearning and love,
How can my heart feel youthful passion,
When my heart is a weaned child in matters of love?
When it's a child at love, still nursing?

Naught remains in me but a sighing breath,
A sigh and a painful wrenching within the ribs.
A painful groan in my ribs' hollows.

A choking grief is within me; when memory returns, it returns,
If recollection comes, it comes with pain;
And a grief-choked illness returns within my heart.
An old disease flares in my heart anew.

And my long-familiar longing returns to me, while
Old longing wrestles me, and I'm assailed
Countless calamities and cares wrestle with my strength.
By waves of care, anxieties, and gloom.

For there my heart will find the peace it wants-
And companionship, and pure light, and a breeze.
Companionship, pure light, and gentle breeze.

A heart ailing in misery can behold.

And the greatest evil is for an eye to be turned
Most frightening is when feelings die away,
Away from the light, for the night at hand is pitch-black.
And souls and bodies are left desolate.

O Time, you trouble my life's peace, and slay
And souls and bodies to grow barren of them.
My hopes; bereft, myself I can't redeem.

O Time, this life has disturbed my peace,
You've robbed me of my youth's carefree joy,
And my hope has died; I am truly bereft.
And left me wandering in life's barren wastes.

And now I wander aimlessly through life's wilderness.
For my heart with stars in darkness' mantle.

Are stars for my heart in the night of calamities.
And memories attack me, ravening clouds.

By them I find my way when life dozes, and
Sorrow has lain me in its painful bed,
The black morning visitors toss me about—for they are clouds,
As though some hidden serpent's bitten me.

And pillow me, restless, in sorrow's cradle,
Take from me will; quench hell's flames in my heart;
As though I were a snake-bitten man among those they have stung.

Weigh down my spirit with its sickness' loads-
A blaze in my heart: it is truly hell.
There anguish sits enthroned, a resident.

And press upon my soul with the burdens of its illness,
Restoring what my heart in mercy gave,
For it has a seat and an abode within the soul.
Though racked by fate, magnanimous still.

Perhaps a passing thought in life, overlooked by sorrow,
Each day I bow before it worshipfully,
And an opportunity hovering this side of extinction,
Yearning for that long-suffering tormenter.
