فقلت لها في الناس مالي ثاني

She asks me about my origin and my homelands.

You asked me about my origin and homeland

So I told her: among people, I have no equal.

So I said to her I have no other among people

إبي آدمٌ والأم حواءُ غنما

إبي آدمٌ والأم حواءُ غنما

فؤادي لا أهلٌ ولا أبوان

فؤادي لا أهلٌ ولا أبوان

My father is Adam, my mother Eve; yet

My father is Adam and my mother is Eve

my heart has neither kin nor parents.

My heart has no family or parents

تلقيتُه من مهبط الوحي ساكباً

تلقيتُه من مهبط الوحي ساكباً

عليَّ ضياءً باهر اللمعان

عليَّ ضياءً باهر اللمعان

I received it from where revelation descends, as it poured

I received it from the place of revelation pouring

upon me a light of dazzling brilliance.

Upon me a brilliant light

أفاضته أمُّ النور يوم أَفاضها

أفاضته أمُّ النور يوم أَفاضها

الإِلهُ فجاءَت في أَتم كيان

الإِلهُ فجاءَت في أَتم كيان

The Mother of Light poured it forth the day she was poured forth

It was bestowed by the Mother of Light the day she bestowed

by God; she came into being in the most perfect form.

By God, so it came in the most perfect existence

وثبَّتَها في اللانهاية آمراً

وثبَّتَها في اللانهاية آمراً

على بعضها الأفلاكَ بالدوران

على بعضها الأفلاكَ بالدوران

And He set her firm in infinity, commanding

And He affirmed it in infinity, commanding

the celestial spheres to revolve one above another.

Some of the planets to orbit around it

لها الشمسُ قطبٌ قد تنظَّمَ حولها

لها الشمسُ قطبٌ قد تنظَّمَ حولها

عرائسُ تجلوها بحسن بيان

عرائسُ تجلوها بحسن بيان

The sun is her axis; around it are arrayed

For it the sun is an axis around which is organized

brides it unveils with graceful clarity.

Brides who adorn it with the beauty of rhetoric

فصدري أفلاكٌ وقلبي شمسُها

فصدري أفلاكٌ وقلبي شمسُها

سروري وحزني ذانك الملوان

سروري وحزني ذانك الملوان

So my breast is celestial spheres, and my heart their sun;

So my chest is an orbit and my heart is its sun

my joy and my sorrow are those two: night and day.

My happiness and sorrow are those two colors

هَمَمتُ كأني شعلةٌ أبديةٌ

هَمَمتُ كأني شعلةٌ أبديةٌ

إلى مستَقَرِّ الخلدِ بالطيران

إلى مستَقَرِّ الخلدِ بالطيران

I resolved, as though I were an eternal flame,

I aspired as if I were an eternal flame

to fly to the abode of eternity.

To the abode of eternity in flight

جُبِلتُ كما لا تعلمين فإنن

جُبِلتُ كما لا تعلمين فإنن

أخو كل جيلٍ وابنُ كل زمان

أخو كل جيلٍ وابنُ كل زمان

I was fashioned in a way unknown to you, for I am

I was created, as you don't know, so I am

a brother to every generation and a son of every age.

A brother of every generation and son of every era
