May I lose you, O heart—what have you gained,

While you are drunk on the wine of life?

And in the garden the blossoms have laughed at

The morning's weeping as it pours down upon them,

    Gloating and heedless—such is time,

And what appears, and what it contains.

And I bear your burden through the years, until

I die, having endured for so long.

Despair over you insistently returns to me,

So I am drowned in it and find no balance.

And how can I find balance, while life wears away,

And life's span does not draw near, but departs?

And indeed life's crescent, when it appears,

    Wanes before it becomes full.
