I would give my life for you, graceful in your walk, when

Your figure swayed like a fresh green bough,

And came forward clad in velvet—

So silk had robed itself in silk.

As though you were in darkness, and there had risen

Above it your face, a radiant full moon.

And your eyes are two stars of good fortune in

The heaven of beauty, pouring forth light.

    This robe embraces your figure

In ardent love, as a calyx enfolds fragrance.

And glory to God for what it embraces! And I

Have therefore grown jealous of it.

    وخير الورى من يكن عذيرا

    Ah, then forgive the despair of a jealous lover;

And the best of humankind is one who forgives.

As though the rippling of that silk

Were magic that deceives a keen-sighted eye.

And the gleam within it has adorned it,

    As smiles have adorned lips.

But no—that is not its own; it has merely

Come to borrow some radiance from you.

And however dense its weave, your light

Is brighter in purity and more plainly revealed.

As night glows while the full moon rests

Behind the clouds, refusing to unveil itself.

    يجلُ سناك ظهورا

    Winter has departed, and here is spring—cast it off;

Your radiance will shine forth clearly,

And reveal a beauty whose slightest charm

Bewitches youths and puts houris to shame,

And takes the mind captive, until

The heart, ruled by love, almost takes flight.

    إذا ما الربيع أتاه بشيرا

    Likewise the gardens' calyx opens

    When spring comes to it bearing glad tidings;

Then it wafts sweet fragrance and blossoms

Among the boughs, enticing the birds.

And you are the gardens, and you are spring,

And you are life itself—hope and joy.

Remove it and fold it away, so that

My gloating over it may be justified, and I may be grateful.

But after a year it will return

To its old ways, and I will be jealous again.
