    وأهوى الظلامَ وأهوى الضياءَ

    I love the forenoon and I love the evening;

    And I adore the darkness and adore the light;

And a time in which my soul flutters,

That wrestles with me for the continuance of my existence.

Life's meanings are like its hours:

So what is gladdened gladdens, and what is saddened saddens.

When the sun sends forth light, it appears

Like a spring of carnelian gushing water,

And flows like raw gold melted and poured

Upon the universe, watering space and air.

    حسبتَ الخدود لهن إناءَ

    It shimmers like the tears of maidens;

You would think their cheeks a vessel.

And the cold of night is nothing but silver,

It melts into radiance and illumines the splendor.

The beautiful women had donned mourning clothes,

And unveiled every face that shone.

And if night settles, blackness rises,

Pitch-black, like a mind that has lost intelligence.

As though the beauties had spread out their hair,

And veiled their faces out of modesty.

So the morning sun is flowing carnelian,

And we have named the carnelian Dhukāʾ.

And the full moon of darkness is silver; hence

The silver's light sparkles with purity.

And darkness is nothing but annihilation,

Which appears whenever darkness appears to us.

And our saying “sun,” “full moon,” and “dawn,”

And “night” in life is nothing but disputation.

And life is indeed spent thus:

At times darkness, at times light.

And nothing differs but an eye that sees it

As misery, and an eye that sees it as bliss.

And light is nothing but life; so this one

Saw it as morning, and that one as evening.
