    I kept the old pledge to you, for I

    believe that the worst of people is one who breaks a pledge.

    And I chose to remain wretched and disappointed

    rather than yield to scheming, rage, and hatred.

    And were I to count every wrong

    you dealt me, time would be too short to number them.

    بعيداً كأني لم أكن أطلب البعدا

    Shall I recall your contemptuous neglect of me, and your casting me

    far away, as though I were not seeking distance;

    كما يلقم النيران موقدها وقدا

    and the inflaming of my breast with slanders between us,

    as one who kindles fires feeds them fuel;

    لدى صاحب لي لا أعاد ولا أبدا

    and what you displayed in disgust

    before a friend of mine—may he neither repeat it nor begin it;

    وقصدَك إذلالي وسؤتِ به قصدا

    and your keeping another's company to stir my jealousy,

    and your intent to humiliate me—how vile that purpose was;

    and your airs of presumption toward me, and suspicion

    of the purity of what my heart concealed and revealed?

    Know that, despite you, I am free

    of baseness; you have dealt me its full measure, and I can do nothing.

    And despite myself I endure, untouched

    by your harm; my doing without you has robbed you of reason.

    God help me with a heart where misery dwells,

    as night has settled, black, among the ruins.

    أصد بصمتي كل نازلة صدا

    And I am indeed content with what I endure;

    with my silence I fend off every calamity.

    وسيان عفواً كان ذلك أم عمدا

    I shall forget a torment whose source was loving you;

    whether unintended or deliberate, it is all the same.

    And I swear that I have loved; yet

    I see that I no longer feel passion.

    Adversities have indeed done their work on me,

    so I have grown patient and steadfast as they recur.

    I once kept company with Time for your sake, O Hind,

    and my share from you both was despair and renunciation.

    I would have kept my resolve and firmness, had

    the betrayal of the one I love not unstrung the necklace.

    How, then, can I hope to live after it, O Hind,

    when my days show me a Hind in every beautiful woman?
