Have you seen the beloved in robes of
black, like a sun encircled by clouds?
فيin ثيابِgarments الحدادِmourning بينamong لِداتٍfemale peers
في ثيابِ الحدادِ بين لِداتٍ
هيshe سعدُjoy الحمىthe abode وهنَّand they النعيمbliss
هي سعدُ الحمى وهنَّ النعيم
In mourning dress among her peers,
She is the joy of the abode, and they its bliss.
خاطراتٍgliding past يمسنَthey sway عنfrom خيزرانbamboo
خاطراتٍ يمسنَ عن خيزران
ناعمِsupple وجههُنَّtheir faces صبحٌa dawn وسيمlovely
ناعمِ وجههُنَّ صبحٌ وسيم
Gliding past, swaying like bamboo,
supple, their faces a lovely dawn.
فيin رياضٍgardens مثلlike السماءِthe sky صفاءًin purity
في رياضٍ مثل السماءِ صفاءً
هيshe بدرٌa full moon بهاin them وهنَّand they النجومthe stars
هي بدرٌ بها وهنَّ النجوم
In gardens as pure as the sky,
She is a full moon there, and they the stars.
رنَّحتنيshe made me reel بلحظهاwith her glance حينwhen مَرَّتshe passed
رنَّحتني بلحظها حين مَرَّت
مثلماjust as رنَّحset swaying الغصونَthe branches النسيمthe breeze
مثلما رنَّح الغصونَ النسيم
She made me reel with her glance as she passed,
just as the breeze set the branches swaying.
بَسَمَتshe smiled عنrevealing لآلئٍpearls وعقيقٍand carnelian
بَسَمَت عن لآلئٍ وعقيقٍ
فكأنَّso, as though اللثاتَthe gums عقدٌa necklace نظيمwell-strung
فكأنَّ اللثاتَ عقدٌ نظيم
She smiled, revealing pearls and carnelian,
as though her gums were a well-strung necklace.
ماhow ألذsweet ابتسامةًa smile منfrom فمthe mouth of المحبوبthe beloved
ما ألذ ابتسامةً من فم المحبوب
إنif كانis رمزَهاits message التسليمsurrender
إن كان رمزَها التسليم
How sweet a smile from the beloved's mouth,
if it signals surrender!
هيit فجرthe dawn of الآمالhopes فيat مشرقthe sunrise of العمرlife
هي فجر الآمال في مشرق العمر
يراهhe sees it المخيَّبُthe disappointed one المحرومthe deprived one
يراه المخيَّبُ المحروم
It is the dawn of hopes at life's sunrise,
beheld by the disappointed and deprived.
هيit نورthe light of الفؤادthe heart قدhas شفَّgiven a glimpse عنهof it
هي نور الفؤاد قد شفَّ عنه
ثغرa mouth حبlove بهwith it الفؤادُthe heart بهيمdark
ثغر حب به الفؤادُ بهيم
It is the heart's light, revealed
by love's lips, while the heart lies dark with love.
إنماonly الحبُّlove طفرةa burst النورlight فيin القلبِthe heart
إنما الحبُّ طفرة النور في القلبِ
وسرُّand the secret of الغرامpassion سرٌّa secret قديمancient
وسرُّ الغرام سرٌّ قديم
Love is but a burst of light within the heart,
and passion's secret is an ancient secret.
وكذاand likewise العمرُlife مطلعُthe dawning of السعدِjoy فيهwithin it
وكذا العمرُ مطلعُ السعدِ فيه
بسمةa smile والحياةُand life ليلٌa night بهيمpitch-dark
بسمة والحياةُ ليلٌ بهيم
So too with life: the dawn of joy within it
is a smile, while life is a pitch-dark night.
