Do not imitate them when you see them.

They have grown used to painting the face white and red.

If they knew the consequences of the paint,

They would seek refuge with their faces in the Lord of all creation.

They deceived you with the ugly example, just as they themselves

Were deceived by it and became a repugnant example.

These are their faces; look at them all:

Blotches that offend taste and are ugly to behold.

You are the beautiful one, glorying over them,

Proudly, as the anemone surpassed the safflower.

    أفتقتلين بها الحياةَ تحسرا

    You are youth, tender and full of laughter;

Will you then kill life with it, in sorrow?

And you are ivory, pure and spotless,

And dawn, its edges fluttering, aglow,

And the gazelle, kohl-dark of eye, enchanting,

And the bough, king of the garden, glorying in blossom,

And the rising sun, whose light rippled

In the two easts, becoming a delight to behold.

    Why do you love clouds

Of dusky gray, veiling your radiant face?

And why do you cast away the blossoms of the

Fresh bough, so that it dries and is broken?

And why do you forbid the gazelle to

Gaze, kohl-dark of eye, dusky, with eyes of vivid black and white?

And why do you veil the dawn with the

Pitch-black kohl-stick, leaving it disfigured and clouded?

And why do you hide ivory in

Dust, so that the Pleiades hide in the earth?

Keep the charms in your eyes unalloyed,

And murmur of life, sweet and green.

The difference between honorable women and wanton

Women—their faces will not reveal it to an onlooker.

    تستنزلي النجم الأغر الأزهرا

    So leave off display and adornment, and smile;

You will bring down the brilliant, radiant star.

Indeed, a beautiful woman is the handiwork of the All-Merciful, not

The work of cosmetic powder, embellished and falsified.
