By God, I possess nothing of my soul

By God, I own nothing of my passion

but the complaints of lamenting reason,

Except forlorn complaints and sighs,

ومن فؤادي غير إيغاله

ومن فؤادي غير إيغاله

في اليأس والمجهلة الداجيه

في اليأس والمجهلة الداجيه

and of my heart, nothing but its plunging

And nothing of my heart except its plunging

into despair and the dark, trackless wilderness,

Into despair and confounding gloom.

ومن مداعي العمر غير الأسى

ومن مداعي العمر غير الأسى

والبؤس والنازلة الداهيه

والبؤس والنازلة الداهيه

and of life's inducements, nothing but sorrow,

And nothing of my life’s prayers

misery, and dire calamity.

Except sorrow, misery, and woes,

من لي بأن تلقينني بالرضى

أَلقَ المنى زاهرة زاهيه

أَلقَ المنى زاهرة زاهيه

Who will grant that, with your favor, you give me

Who will meet me with acceptance

the radiance of wishes, blossoming and bright,

And strew my wishes blossoming and bright?

فأَستعيدُ العمر من بدئه

فأَستعيدُ العمر من بدئه

مستدنياً آمالي النائيه

مستدنياً آمالي النائيه

so I may regain life from its beginning,

So I regain my life from its beginning,

drawing my distant hopes near,

Drawing near my distant hopes,

مسامحاً دهري عما جنى

مسامحاً دهري عما جنى

مرتجعاً أيّامي الخاليه

مرتجعاً أيّامي الخاليه

forgiving my fate for the wrong it did,

Forgiving fate for all it has reaped

reclaiming my bygone days?

Reclaiming my empty days.

إذن أحبَّ القلبُ أسقامَه

إذن أحبَّ القلبُ أسقامَه

كأنها صححته الماضيه

كأنها صححته الماضيه

Then the heart would love its ailments,

Then the heart will love its own pains

as though they were its former health,

As if they have healed its past,

وجددت نفسي شبابي الذي

وجددت نفسي شبابي الذي

أهرمت في العشرين يا قاسيه

أهرمت في العشرين يا قاسيه

and my soul would renew my youth, which

And renew my youth which has faded

you made old at twenty, O cruel one.

In my twenties, oh you tyrant!

أراك ي نجواي مغمورةً

بالنور تجلوك بالمنى الجاليه

I see you in my secret reverie, bathed

I see you, my salvation, immersed

in light; my reverie reveals you through illuminating hopes,

In light, illuminated with wishes,

طائرةً في رائعات السنى

طائرةً في رائعات السنى

خاطرةً في الحللِ الراضيه

خاطرةً في الحللِ الراضيه

flying amid the marvels of radiance,

Flying in the splendors of eras,

gliding in robes of contentment,

Appearing in contented garments.

كربةِ الشِعرِ وقد رفرفت

كربةِ الشِعرِ وقد رفرفت

في أفقها باديةً خافيه

في أفقها باديةً خافيه

like the goddess of poetry, who has fluttered

Matron of poetry, you have fluttered

in her horizon, now visible, now hidden.

In its horizon bare and hidden.

طلعت في منطقةٍ حولها

طلعت في منطقةٍ حولها

آلهةٌ رائحة غاديه

آلهةٌ رائحة غاديه

You arose within a realm, around which

You rose in a region encircled

gods journey at evening and at dawn,

By drifting, fragrant goddesses,

مجنحو الأوساط مستكملو

مجنحو الأوساط مستكملو

جمال انوارهم الصافيه

جمال انوارهم الصافيه

winged at the waist, possessing in full

Angels girdled, perfecting

the beauty of their pure lights,

The beauty of their pure lights,

مؤتلقو الأوجه الحاظهم

مؤتلقو الأوجه الحاظهم

ترد صولات الدجى العاديه

ترد صولات الدجى العاديه

radiant of face; their glances

With faces unveiled, their eyes deflecting

repel the hostile onslaughts of darkness.

The assaults of the common gloom.

منك استعاروا الحسن كالأنجم

منك استعاروا الحسن كالأنجم

الزهراء أبهى حسنها عاريه

الزهراء أبهى حسنها عاريه

From you they borrowed beauty, like the stars,

From you they borrowed beauty like stars -

radiant, whose fairest beauty is on loan.

The brightest stripped of her beauty.

أقيم عرشٌ أنت من فوقه

أقيم عرشٌ أنت من فوقه

بيهم آمرةٌ ناهيه

بيهم آمرةٌ ناهيه

A throne was raised; from above it you

A throne is set up with you above it,

command and forbid among them.

A commanding, forbidding mistress.

مد شعاعاً في المسا أصلها

مد شعاعاً في المسا أصلها

وفرعها في الأبحر القاصيه

وفرعها في الأبحر القاصيه

Its root stretched a ray into the evening,

A ray extends in the evening whose origin

and its branch into the distant seas.

Is in it and whose branch is in the far seas.

صفا وحن البحر إذا أشرقت

صفا وحن البحر إذا أشرقت

سماؤك الصافية الحاينه

سماؤك الصافية الحاينه

The sea grew clear and yearned as there shone

Clear is the sea when your bright

your clear, tender sky.

Sky dawns, smiling and calm.

بينهما قد نشرت عطرها

بينهما قد نشرت عطرها

ثغرو هذي الروضة الزاكيه

ثغرو هذي الروضة الزاكيه

Between them its perfume has been spread

Between them your scent has spread

by the mouths of this fragrant garden.

In this blossoming, fertile garden.

أزهارها الآمال مجلوةً

أزهارها الآمال مجلوةً

حلّى الضحى أوجهها الناديه

حلّى الضحى أوجهها الناديه

Its flowers are hopes, polished bright;

Its flowers are wishes, adorned.

the morning light adorned their dewy faces.

The morning’s faces are laughing.

The heartache of a heart which finds no solace

love for you but the consoling illness,

on the twin brinks of a frowning grave

and a smiling, visible paradise,

يخالساني نظراً عانياً

يجاذباني نفسي العانيه

both stealing an anguished glance from me,

They vie for my weary glance

both contending with me for my anguished soul,

And tug my weary soul.

بينا أرى الحب بعيد المدى

تقله أيدي السنا العاليه

تقله أيدي السنا العاليه

while I see love, far-reaching,

While I see love, boundless,

borne by the lofty hands of radiance,

Carried off by towering years.

إذا بنفسي في بحار الأسى

إذا بنفسي في بحار الأسى

والليلُ أرخى الظلم الغاشيه

والليلُ أرخى الظلم الغاشيه

suddenly my soul is in seas of sorrow,

Then I find my soul in oceans of grief

and night has let fall its enveloping shadows.

As night lets fall its shrouding darkness.

يا منيتي هذي حياتي وما

حوته في المنطقة الراقيه

حوته في المنطقة الراقيه

O my heart's desire, this is my life and what

O my wish, this is my life and what

it held within the lofty realm.

It contained in the exalted sphere -

العرش قلبي قد ترقيته

قام على آمالي الجاثيه

قام على آمالي الجاثيه

The throne is my heart; you have ascended it;

My heart is the throne I raised up

it rose upon my kneeling hopes.

Standing on my fallen hopes.

Silver dreams have gathered around you;

Dreams encircle you like silver

my weeping eyelids send them forth.

Sent by my weeping eyelids,

كأن نفسي إذ تملكتها

تحولت فيك منى حاليه

As though my soul, when you possessed it,

As if when my soul possessed you

became, in you, bejeweled hopes.

You transformed into my present wish.

And all that has adorned my life,

And all the bright signs that adorned

every dazzling, splendid sign,

My life with scenes of joy -

مكتسبٌ منك الجمال الذي

مكتسبٌ منك الجمال الذي

أولتكه أيدي الرضى الناديه

أولتكه أيدي الرضى الناديه

has gained from you the beauty that

Are gains from you, the beauty

the dewy hands of favor bestowed upon you.

Bestowed by the hands of consent.

أما إذا عادت إلى أعيني

أما إذا عادت إلى أعيني

حقيقة الذاكرة الناسيه

حقيقة الذاكرة الناسيه

But when there returns to my eyes

But when the mindful memory returns

the truth of forgetful memory,

To my eyes, and my soul wakes

وانتبهت نفسي إلى نفسيها

كما ترفُّ المقلُ الغافيه

and my soul awakens to itself,

To itself, as the drowsy eyelid flickers,

as sleeping eyes flutter,

I return to night, and wounds of sorrow

عدت إلى الليل وعادت إلى

قلبي جرحاتُ الأسى الداميه

قلبي جرحاتُ الأسى الداميه

I return to night, and to

Return to my heart, deep and bloody.

And so is life - the lies

وهكذا العمر أكاذيبه

وهكذا العمر أكاذيبه

متاع هذي الأمم الفانيه

متاع هذي الأمم الفانيه

And so is life: its lies

Of these fleeting nations.

are the pleasures of these mortal peoples;

If it seems truthful, they see what grieves

فإن تراءى صادقاً أبصروا

فإن تراءى صادقاً أبصروا

ما يفجع الآمنة الهانيه

ما يفجع الآمنة الهانيه

for if it appears truthful, they behold

The relaxed, the hopeful.

what brings grief to the secure and carefree.

And love in life is a veneer that covered

والحب في العمر طلاءٌ كسا

والحب في العمر طلاءٌ كسا

فواجع الكارثة الخافيه

فواجع الكارثة الخافيه

And love, in life, is a coating that covers

The horrors of the hidden calamity.

the horrors of hidden catastrophe.

So favor me, adorning with acceptance,

فأحسني زخرفة بالرضى

فأحسني زخرفة بالرضى

إن الرضى غاية آماليه

إن الرضى غاية آماليه

So make its adornment beautiful with your favor,

For acceptance is the goal of my hopes.

for your favor is the utmost of my hopes.
