    من غزل نور الأُفق الأزرق

    By the sanctity of your eyes, and all they hold

    of the love-song of the blue horizon's light;

    نورُ يراع مظلمٍ مبرق

    and by your brows, whose twin arches were traced

    by the light of a dark, flashing reed pen;

    منسم عطر الهوى المنشق

    and by a nose-tip whose shape was devised

    by a breath of love's inhaled perfume;

    ح في الوجه الصبوح النقي

    and by your cheeks, which drank the apples' blush

    in your radiant, pure face;

    ينعقد التاج على المفرق

    and by your hair, raised as a crown, as

    a crown is fastened upon the parting;

    يطفح نورُ الشمس في المشرق

    and by your face, overflowing with light, as

    the sun's light overflows in the east;

    للحسن لم يُعرف ولم يُسبق

    and by your neck, awe-inspiring in a mold

    of beauty unknown and without precedent;

    نهدان كنزُ الناظر المملق

    and by your ivory chest, adorned

    by two breasts—the impoverished beholder's treasure;

    يعطف ليناً غُصُنُ الزنبق

    and by your waist, bending softly as

    the lily's stem bends softly;

    ينم حسن الغُصُنُ الأرشق

    and by your swelling hips, whose majesty

    reveals the beauty of the most graceful bough;

    and by the gazelle's glance, and all the delicacy

    the qualities of your boundless beauty have lent it—

    بها أوالي حسنك المُطلق

    I love you till I have no heart

    with which to remain devoted to your boundless beauty;

    nor is there in my body a drop of my blood

    that has not fermented into love, that has not loved.

    Nor do I see anyone but you among those I see,

    as though no one else had been created.

    لا رقيةٌ في الحب منه تقي

    O enchantment of the eye, whose spell

    no charm in love can ward off;

    صفاءُ نورٍ باسمٍ مشرق

    and joy of life, whose beauty

    is the clarity of a smiling, radiant light;

    منه حياتي في الهوى أستقي

    and love's watering-place, from whose waters

    I draw my life in passion;

    يروي فؤادي الظامئ المعرق

    and star of life, whose light

    gives drink to my thirsty, sweating heart;

    لغير نشر الحب لم يعبق

    and garden of humankind, whose fragrance

    has never breathed anything but love's perfume;

    يسكب لي السعد الذي أنتقي

    and comfort of the heart, whose coolness

    pours out for me the happiness I choose;

    and the soul's desire, whose fulfillment

    is the goal of my wasted, spent life.

    Nothing remains of me but a trace, through which

    what is left points to what has gone.

    What depths of love has it not braved—

    my lofty banner—or fluttered over?

    Nay, what misery from you have I not endured?

    Nay, what effort for your sake has not failed?

    Such is my heart in love, for

    all calamities gather within it,

    for no fault at all, save that it is

    a captive of a manifest, binding love.

    وقد تحكَّمتِ به فارفقي

    So do not go too far in shunning it;

    and since you hold it in your power, be gentle.

    And treat it with favor, for

    what it has suffered from your love is enough for it.

    And I remain a slave; you have

    tested my devotion, so do not set me free.

    In me is a jealousy that makes me feel it is

    the death of my heart, enraged and choking back its anger.

    As though my heart, in its sea, were the

    drowning one, neither saved nor drowned.

    A bitterness coursing through my blood,

    and a choking lump in my constricted chest,

    and an urge within the soul, leaping

    toward a beloved who has not longed for me.

    ومن سوى الغيرة لم أفرق

    I have lost my resolve, for it has betrayed me;

    and I have feared nothing but jealousy.

    Despair hounds me, but I

    remain as one patient and apprehensive.

    I go at dusk with misery, and at dawn with it,

    and with a frowning, downcast face.

    And I do not complain, for complaints do not

    yield anything but disturbance and anxiety.
