By the life of God, this remorse is absurd,

and false are my complaint, sorrow, and grievance.

I have no illness to complain of, nor any hurt

with which I have been struck, or anything that stings and pains.

as an illness ends when treated and eradicated.

So I profit from my life in this world, and it

is a gain here for a heart pure in its inward self.

and no one else pays a price for what I obtain.

    I have spared humankind my evil—and I have none—and

all humankind are merely those who are what they are.

My words are neither complaint nor boast; it is only that,

despite being what I am, my heart bleeds and is wounded.

I turn through life's folds, searching

for a deed that might one day brand a person with shame.

So I emerge with a heart God knows is pure,

and a soul that, despite its flaws, mends itself.

I have gone through every cycle of life,

and examined in it what shines and what grows dark.

those who plunge in win the spoils.

Indeed, I need no people; I live

by myself, free and carefree, enjoying ease.

As though I were a bird feeding freely in the thickets,

going out at evening and morning, singing and warbling.

And my life is a pool that has flowed in ripples,

    its events its smiling pebbles.

It kisses the sun's mouth, a mouth of rays,

and the full moon and stars wash their faces in it.

by the east wind's breeze, which comes to greet it.

It comforts it with fragrant wafts and perfume, dictating

to it the flowers' tale, though it is conjectural.

And the bending branch recounts its speech to it,

and what the gardens' patterned grass has said.

And it explains the sky's secret to it, even if

    this enveloping darkness conceals it.

Languages whose eloquence makes the great trees tremble,

and which are not translated into any other tongue.

and here I am, like a stem that withers and is broken.

while I spend the nights, ignorant, learning.

I see generations among them, their faces varied:

this one joyful, that one scowling.

They pass in bands, their ranks like

ants coming to a nest and crowding together.

if bodily honor is what you know it to be.

So understand: bodily honor is surrendered to reach

an aim whose tangible reality has bodily form.

So you enter the world happy and contented,

and leave it a child, oppressed and weaned.
