Are you angry at a remark I made in passing?

In it, I harbored no ill suspicion or thought.

I meant nothing but a simple jest, yet

    You misunderstood a brief explanation.

For remembering what has passed pains me,

And you will never see me without remembrance.

And memory kills the heart when it settles

On a place within it, split open by longing.

I love you until no hearts or

Souls throb with love among humankind.

Then why do your smiling eyes disbelieve me,

Though in them, for me, is the light of sun and moon?

And you are light when clear, and fire when

Clouded—far be clarity and cloudiness from you.

Rather, in you, O Suad, is a meaning that has become

Free of notions of benefit and harm:

Pure happiness, nourished by hope, and now

It rests safe from calamities and changes of fortune.

Then why do I go wretched in my love for you, and why

Have you held me between reaching death's waters and departing?

Ask the nights about my grief and my love-madness,

And about my worries, my tears, and my sleeplessness.

I fold my ribs around a heart, and they are desolate,

As though they were one of the most harrowing lessons.

Time has ravaged my body and shattered it

With sickness, and choked me on a cold, palatable draught.

    And everything has an image that portrays it;

So I have become one of misery's truest portraits.

For your eyes, I face time armored

With the resolve and endurance I have taken my fill of.

Misery deepens my understanding of life whenever

I gain in knowledge, pairing experience with experience.

Such is the order of the One who created the world and ordained for it

This order, and set it running by decree.

People have a sun, and I have two: one

Among the heavenly bodies, the other among humankind.

Their beauty is equal, but the dearer of the two

To me is she who enchants me with speech and gaze.

And people have two kinds of heart: one whose bird has flown

With the breeze, and one hewn from stone.

This one lives without worry or distress,

And that one remains the companion of worry and distress.

Indeed, the one more deserving of happiness, if they but knew,

Is he whom a dying man's breaths never leave.

So is my heart, and in it, O Suad, has settled

Love for you—so rule as you wish, and decide.
